Starting pitchers

Paolo Espino (2-2, 2.48 ERA): Espino is nothing special for this Washington team, but he has given up only three earned runs over his last 9 1-3 innings of work. The veteran isn’t going to work deep into this game or anything, but the Nationals can count on them to give him a chance in a spot start. That’s exactly why he’s on this roster, and he also happened to pitch 3 1-3 innings of one-run ball against the Giants on June 11.

Logan Webb (4-3, 3.86 ERA): Webb is being activated from the DL after a shoulder injury and the hope for San Francisco is that he’ll be able to recapture his form. Before getting hurt, Webb had allowed just two earned runs in his previous 17 innings on the mound. The Giants won in all three of those outings and he was just in a real groove. Also, Webb is 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA at home this season, so he has to be looking forward to this game.

Moneyline pick

Espino probably isn’t the better of the two pitchers in this one, but the righty is more than capable of going out there and giving the Nationals four or five innings of solid work. He gave up just three earned runs in 4 1-3 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers in his last start, and he’s capable of being a little better than that. Back on June 11, Espino struck out five batters and gave up just one earned run in 3 1-3 innings against this Giants team. They had trouble making contact against him, which is a good sign heading into this game.

Meanwhile, Webb had been excellent for San Francisco before getting injured, but it’s not easy coming back from the DL and performing at a high level. The righty also happened to have injured his shoulder, so this isn’t just some minor injury. It could take some time for him to get in a groove once again, and it wouldn’t be all that surprising if he struggles at the start of this game.

PREDICTION: Nationals ML (+136)

Over/Under pick

While Webb could struggle at the start of this game, it shouldn’t take long for him to ultimately settle in and finish things off strong. That shoulder injury isn’t easy to come back from, but he’s a good pitcher and he hasn’t faced this Nationals team just yet. That means that Washington’s hitters won’t have any familiarity with him, giving him a good chance of turning in something like a quality start here. However, Espino should be able to do the same, and he might even be a bit better over five innings.

PREDICTION: Under 9.0 (-110)
