Today’s MLB Prop Picks: Veteran First Basemen Ride High

Thursday is a travel day for a lot of teams and so we've got a reduced slate to choose from for our MLB player prop picks. There's still value to be found, especially by targeting hot-hitting Freddie Freeman at home against the Padres.

The month of June concludes with a fairly light MLB slate, but we’ll try to make the most of it with a trio of player prop picks!

Tonight we’re bullish on two veteran first basemen doing damage. We’re also backing a promising young righty to rack up the strikeouts in Seattle.

Here are our three favorite MLB player prop picks for Thursday, June 30.

Votto bangs, don't ya know?

It’s a matchup that we’ve seen plenty of times, and we’ll watch it play out again on Thursday night as Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto squares off against Chicago Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks. “Votto-matic” has gotten the better of the “The Professor” on plenty of occasions, and he should do so once more in this spot.

Votto is showing signs of turning a corner after a dreadful start to the season, as he’s racked up four hits — all doubles — over his last three games. He now has at least one hit in eight of his last 12 contests, bringing his season total to 42. Of those 42 hits, exactly half of them have been for extra bases.

Votto’s track record against Hendricks — who’s struggled mightily this season (3-6, 4.90 ERA) — is a strong one. He’s 15-for-38 (.395) all-time against the former ERA title winner with nine extra-base hits.

With Votto listed in the -240 range to get a hit in this tilt but in the neighborhood of even-money to tally two or more bases in any way, shape, or form, we’ll roll the dice with the far better price.

Joey Votto Prop: Over 1.5 total bases (+100 at FanDuel)

Fly high Freeman, yeah

Freddie Freeman’s emotional return to Atlanta last weekend — coupled with his recent dismissal of agency Excel Sports Management — has overshadowed just how hot the former NL MVP has been at the plate.

Over the last 15 days, the only player in the majors with a higher batting average than Freeman (.412) is Josh Bell of the Washington Nationals (.467). He’s hit safely in each of his last 13 contests, amassing four homers and 13 RBI. That includes a single and a solo homer hit at Coors Field on Wednesday night.

Freeman heads to a less hitter-friendly venue in Dodger Stadium tonight but takes on a starter in San Diego Padres’ Joe Musgrove against whom he’s 6-for-15 (.400) with a homer and three RBI.

Musgrove has been an early-season Cy Young candidate, but he is fresh off his worst start (and first loss) of the season, as he surrendered six runs over six innings against the Phillies at PETCO Park last Thursday.

Taking Freeman to hit a tater might be too big a leap of faith, as he has only three round-trippers to his credit through 122 at-bats at home this year. But he could very well tally his eighth multi-hit game in a 13-game span.

Freddie Freeman Prop: Over 1.5 hits (+210 at FanDuel)

Go, go, Gilbert

The Oakland A’s will get their first look of the season at one of the most promising young hurlers in the American League when they face the Mariners’ Logan Gilbert in Seattle tonight. Bettors should not expect things to go well for the AL West cellar-dwellers.

Through 15 starts, Gilbert has averaged just over a strikeout per inning, piling up 89 punchouts over 88 2-3 frames. He takes on an A’s squad that’s accumulated the fifth-most strikeouts of any team on the road this season.

Gilbert has been assigned a strikeout total of 5.5 for this tilt, a bar that he’s cleared in nine of his 15 starts in 2022. He’s gone for six or more Ks in four of his first five starts in June.

Logan Gilbert Prop: Over 5.5 strikeouts (-130 at BetMGM)
