Red Sox vs Orioles Prediction, Picks, and Odds for Today's MLB Game

On paper, the Orioles hold every conceivable edge over the Red Sox but Boston starter Cooper Criswell has put together a string of nice starts and could flummox Baltimore's bats. An upset is in the cards.

Latest MLB Picks

It’s been feast or famine for the Baltimore Orioles of late. After getting swept by St. Louis, the O’s dusted the White Sox in four straight. Now, they open a set with division-rival Boston Red Sox — a team they swept earlier this season.

My Red Sox vs. Orioles predictions are going against the home team, though, despite Baltimore being a -162 moneyline favorite in the MLB odds in today's series opener.

Read below for my MLB picks for Monday, May 27.

My analysis

The Boston Red Sox just salvaged its series Sunday against Milwaukee, pulling out a 2-1 win to avoid the sweep. Hitting the road might be just what the team needs. The Red Sox have won four straight away from Fenway, and are one of only two teams in the American League with a winning road record (16-11) and a losing home mark (11-15).

The hitting numbers don’t lie. They're tied for 13th in runs scored overall, and that number leaps to seventh on the road.

A fringe Top-10 team in average, on-base percentage, slugging, and OPS, Boston sits no lower than eighth on the road in all categories, including Top 4 in slugging and OPS.

Cooper Criswell gets the call for Boston. He’s 2-1 with a 2.86 ERA. While he has four no-decisions in May, the BoSox have picked up wins in three of those and in five of his last six outings overall.

He’ll have to slow down a Baltimore Orioles side that mowed the Red Sox down in early April, posting at least seven runs in each game, outscoring Boston 23-10 in a breeze of a sweep.

Baltimore ranks seventh in runs scored and second in slugging, powered by the second-most home runs in baseball, trailing only the Yankees.

Their pitching is in the mix with the top teams too. While Boston leads the bigs with a 2.72 ERA, Baltimore is a sturdy seventh at 3.31, though they lead baseball in both opponent batting average (.202) and WHIP (1.12).

However, today's pitching matchup, on paper at least, leans to Boston. The O’s will send out Cole Irvin, who is back in a starting role after a pair of relief outings. He is 4-2 with a 3.15 ERA, but he has struggled against Boston.

In six career outings vs. the BoSox — three as a starter — Irvin is 0-1 with a 5.16 ERA in 22 2/3 innings. Irvin doesn't miss bats, as his 16.4% strikeout rate shows, which will be a problem against Boston's bats.

Red Sox vs Orioles same-game parlay (SGP)

Red Sox moneyline

Colton Cowser Over 0.5 RBI

Wilyer Abreu Over 0.5 hits

Baltimore outfielder Colton Cowser broke a six-game RBI drought with a solo home run Sunday in a 4-1 win over the White Sox.

We’re banking on the good times rolling as the Red Sox come to town, as Cowser had his most prolific hitting series of the season against them. He went 6-for-14 in that April 9-11 set, with three doubles, two home runs, and 10 RBI. To put that into context, he has 14 RBI across his other 46 games this season.

With +215 odds to pick up a single RBI, that brings the juice up in our SGP.

Let’s wrap up with Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu, who is coming off a 3-for-4 effort in Sunday’s win over the Brewers. Abreu has now hit safely in six of his last seven outings, pushing him to a nice .284 average on the season.
