The first Sunday Night Baseball game of the season features a rivalry matchup between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees.
The Yankees sit at 2-0 after getting the best of the Red Sox (0-2) to start the year. Boston looks to stop the bleeding as it sends youngster Tanner Houck to the mound to do battle with lefty Jordan Montgomery.

Red Sox vs Yankees betting preview
Starting pitchers
Tanner Houck (2021: 1-5, 3.52 ERA): The 6-foot-5 right-hander is just 25 years old and has a limited big league pedigree. What we have seen of him thus far in his career has been encouraging, however. Houck tossed 69 innings a year ago across 18 appearances and 13 starts, accumulating a promising 3.52 ERA despite notching only one win. The underlying analytics were an encouraging sign — Houck managed a 3.20 xERA and a 3.20 xFIP.
Jordan Montgomery (2021: 6-7, 3.83 ERA): The 29-year-old left-hander came into his own a year ago, improving his ERA from 5.11 to 3.82. He possessed a 9.27 K/9 ratio and a 2.92 BB/9 ratio in 2021. He’s pitched well in five starts against the Red Sox in his career, sporting a 3.29 ERA and 1.21 WHIP albeit failing to record a win.

Red Sox vs Yankees picks and predictions
Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.
Moneyline analysis
New York has taken an early lead in the AL East standings over its Boston counterparts.
The pinstripes have gotten stellar production thus far from first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who signed a two-year, $32 million contract in the offseason. The lefty has smacked two home runs across his first two games of the season, helping the Yanks out to a 2-0 record to begin the season.
The Yankees have looked good to begin the year. Sweeping a series is usually not easy, and it’s definitely not easy when the opponent is a rival.
Jordan Montgomery will be on the mound for the pinstripes, and he does have solid numbers against Boston in his career. However, the Sox did hit lefties well a year ago, ranking sixth in team batting average (.264) against southpaws in 2021.
Tanner Houck will be on the mound for the Sox and put up promising numbers a year ago, most notably with a superb 11.35 K/9 ratio that should play well against a Yankees lineup that swings for the fences. Houck has a higher ground ball rate than his pitching counterpart (48.2% for Houck, 42.7% for Montgomery), which should play well on a windy day at Yankee Stadium.
The most recent weather report calls for 12.8 mph winds blowing out to right field. The ability of Houck to keep the ball on the ground at a better rate than Montgomery is an advantage for the Red Sox.
Boston has dropped the first two games of the series but they still have a solid lineup from top to bottom and will have a young pitcher on the mound who put up impressive numbers a year ago. We’ll take a shot with the underdog.
Prediction: Red Sox moneyline (+130 at Caesars)
Over/Under analysis
The wind was blowing out to dead-center yesterday at Yankee Stadium, but the game managed to go Under the total in a 4-2 win for New York. The Yankees’ bullpen was stellar, throwing six no-hit innings after starter Luis Severino was pulled after 65 pitches.
Houck and Montgomery both had solid numbers in 2021 but it’s a tough ask of any pitcher to limit the damage while playing at a park like Yankee Stadium with the wind blowing nearly 13 mph to right field.
The Boston bats have struggled to get going out of the gates but have enough pop to turn things around. The anticipated 2-5 spot in the lineup is especially tough, featuring Trevor Story, Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, and J.D. Martinez.
The Yankees have struggled with health over the last couple of seasons, but this is one of the most dangerous lineups in the league when at full strength. The bad news for Boston is that the Yankees are healthy to begin the season. The additions of Josh Donaldson and Anthony Rizzo have paid immediate dividends.
Prediction: Over 9 (+105 at PointsBet)
Best bet
We believe there is value with the Red Sox on the moneyline.
The Yanks have gotten the better of their rivals to begin the year but the games have been close. The first game went 11 innings in a 6-5 New York win, and the second finished 4-2 thanks to a stellar performance from the Yankees bullpen.
This game is closer to a pick'em than the line indicates.
Pick: Red Sox moneyline (+130 at Caesars)
