Nestor Cortes Jr. (2-1, 2.56 ERA): Cortes has been incredible in his last two starts, as the lefty has allowed only three runs in his last 13 innings of work. Cortes also struck out seven batters in each of those games, showing his best swing-and-miss ability since getting this opportunity in the rotation. Now the lefty gets a crack at an Oakland team that he threw three scoreless innings against back on June 19.
Frankie Montas (9-9, 3.84 ERA): Montas struck out nine batters in seven scoreless innings against the San Francisco Giants in his last trip to the hill, but the Athletics ended up losing that game. One would think Montas will get better run support more often than that, but that’s out of his control. What is in his control is how he pitches, and the righty has been great lately. The 28-year-old has allowed three or fewer runs in each of his last 10 starts.

Moneyline pick
The Athletics are hitting .241 against left-handed pitching, but only three teams in the league have a worse BABIP than Oakland’s .279. That number suggests that the Athletics struggle to make contact against lefties, and that’s not a good sign when facing one as hot as Cortes is.
On top of that, Cortes pitched three scoreless innings against this Oakland team back on June 19, and that will give the 26-year-old the confidence that he can navigate his way through this dangerous Athletics lineup.
The Yankees also have a lineup much better suited to be facing righties now when compared to earlier in the year. New York did a nice job of adding lefty sluggers at the deadline, and both Anthony Rizzo and Joey Gallo should make an impact in this game.
Don’t sleep on Rougned Odor here, either. There’s no guarantee the Yankees will play him in this game, but Odor is 5-for-11 with two doubles, a homer, and five RBIs against Montas in his career. He could provide a spark for New York in this one.
PREDICTION: Yankees (-116)
Over/Under pick
These teams are both capable of scoring a ton of runs on any given day, but there’s a nice pair of starting pitchers toeing the rubber in this one.
On the year, the highest amount of earned runs Cortes has allowed in a start is five, so we haven’t quite seen him on the wrong side of a beatdown just yet. He generally tends to limit big mistakes and get himself out of jams, so he should be able to keep the Yankees in this game on the road.
At the same time, Montas has been on a tear coming into this game. The righty has allowed at most one earned run in three of his last five starts, and he has struck out nine or more batters in four of his last eight outings. For that reason, it’s hard to envision the Yankees offense getting quite as hot as it has been coming into this one.
And all in all, the Under seems like an enticing play with this pitching matchup.
