The National League West has been awesome so far this season, and that should continue tonight when the San Diego Padres host the San Francisco Giants.

Game 1 of this mini two-game set is set up to be an electric pitcher’s duel as Logan Webb toes the rubber against Nick Pivetta.

So, shocker, that my Giants vs. Padres predictions highlight a five-inning total.

Find that and more MLB picks below for this NL West showdown with first pitch scheduled for 9:40 pm ET at PETCO Park in San Diego, on Tuesday, April 29.

Giants vs Padres prediction

My Giants vs Padres best bet: Under 3.5 — first five innings (-115 at bet365)

The San Diego Padres came flying out of the gates this season, starting the season 14-3, putting everyone in the National League West, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, on notice. They were hitting, they were pitching. It was impressive stuff.

However, as happens in baseball, the Padres' bats cooled off, and they are just 3-8 since then.

Luckily, for the Padres, their starting pitching has continued to deal, including tonight’s starter, Nick Pivetta

The 32-year-old right-hander’s first season in San Diego couldn’t have gotten off to a much better start. Pivetta is pitching to a 2.79 expected ERA, limiting opponents to a .204 expected batting average, and is striking out 27% of batters faced.

He’s also been on fire over his last three starts. Pivetta has given up just one run on nine hits while striking out 22 batters over his last 20 innings pitched.

Now, he faces a San Francisco Giants lineup that has been more opportunistic than good. San Francisco enters this game ranked 23rd in batting average, 19th in OPS, and 20th in wRC+.

Countering Pivetta is Giants ace Logan Webb. The 28-year-old right-hander is also pitching very well with a 2.94 xERA with a K-rate of 30.8%. He’s allowed just one earned run on 10 hits while striking out 18 in 12 1/3 innings over his last two starts.

And as noted, the Padres' bats have cooled off. San Diego has plated just 2.1 runs per game during the 3-8 skid, which includes scoring just three runs total during the current four-game losing streak.

The Padres rank next to last in both OPS and wRC+, and 28th in batting average during that 11-game period.

Pitching will be the story early in this ball game. Even though it’s a low number, give me the Under 3.5 in the first five innings in what should be an intensely played division game.

Giants vs Padres same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 3.5 — first five innings

Xander Bogaerts Under 0.5 hits

Matt Chapman Under 0.5 hits

Let’s stick with the theme of the two starters dominating this matchup and add a guy from each team to put up a donut in the hits column tonight.

Let’s start with the Padres’ Xander Bogaerts. Bogaerts' time in San Diego has been a roller coaster full of ups and downs. Unfortunately, for him his in a down section right now.

Bogaerts is hitting just .154 with a .472 OPS over his last 12 games. He’s gone hitless seven times during that stretch and has just four hits in 19 career plate appearances against Logan Webb. So, Under 0.5 hits for Bogaerts.

Next up is Giants third baseman Matt Chapman. After a trademark hot start, Chapman has cooled off. He is hitting just .115 with a .572 OPS over his last eight games, and because of his time in the American League, he’s faced Pivetta the most of any of his teammates.

That’s not a good thing. Chapman is 5-for-25 with 10 strikeouts. That’s good for a .202 xBA and a 40% strikeout rate. Under 0.5 hits for Chapman as well.

He began at Covers as a news editor and has now done everything under the sun when it comes to content. His work has been seen on TSN, Sportsnet, VSiN, and CBS.

These days Andrew’s betting expertise is focused on his favorite teams – the Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Raptors. He’s also an avid college football fan and bettor. You can also call him Covers’ Sixth Man, as he regularly steps up to guest host Before You Bet and our MLB and NCAAF release shows.

The sportsbook where he does the bulk of his betting is bet365 thanks to its numerous prop betting options and competitive odds. His best advice? Find the balance between the numbers and what you see on the playing field. Then find the best price using multiple books. And don’t ask him where the nickname Taco comes from. It’s not an interesting story. Seriously.
