Grizzlies vs Nets Picks and Predictions: Morant, Memphis Keep it Tight in Brooklyn

The surging Memphis Grizzlies are riding superstar Ja Morant's momentum directly into a showdown against the Nets in Brooklyn. Even if the modest four-game win streak falls by the wayside, we expect the Grizz to keep things close in our NBA betting picks.

The Brooklyn Nets are getting healthy and the return of Kyrie Irving (at least in a limited capacity) is on the horizon. But the Nets have lost two in a row and now welcome the red-hot Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies to town.

Morant has lit up the scoreboard as the Grizzlies come into this one having won four in a row. Are they a live dog getting six points from NBA oddsmakers? Find out in our free NBA betting picks and predictions for Grizzlies vs. Nets on January 3.

Grizzlies vs Nets picks and predictions

Our predictions are compiled from the analysis of the spread and total and are indications of where we are leaning for this game.
Our best bet is the play that we like the most for this game, which we would actually put some of our bankroll behind.

The Grizzlies come into this matchup having won four in a row and Ja Morant has been absolutely on fire over his last three. Morant has poured in 104 points over those three contests, scoring at least 30 points per game while shooting 55.7% from the field, not to mention adding 6.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game over that stretch.

More importantly, the Grizzlies as a team have fed off Morant’s play. Memphis ranks sixth in offensive and defensive rating over their last four games despite being shorthanded.

Meanwhile, the Nets are finally starting to get healthy, but that hasn’t helped in consecutive home losses to the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Clippers.

James Harden has also been tearing it up since his Christmas Day return, averaging 35.5 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists in four games. Kevin Durant also continues to do his thing, but this Nets team just feels like it is lacking chemistry at the moment, and it has hurt them.

Brooklyn has held the lead in each of its last two losses at home before ultimately giving those games away. While the Nets might not lose three in a row, this Grizzlies team is playing with confidence and energy and should be able to keep this one close.

Prediction: Grizzlies +6.5 (-110)

It’s not surprising that the Over is seeing the early love when you consider the way Morant and the Grizz are scoring and that the other team has KD and Harden.

The Grizzlies are averaging 115.8 points over this burgeoning winning streak and, as noted, the Nets have taken a bit of a step back on defense, allowing 113.3 points per game over their last four.

At the other end, the Grizzlies have been tightened things up, but they will be without one of their best defenders in Dillon Brooks, and that certainly won’t help a perimeter defense that ranks 29th in the NBA in opponent 3-point shooting. This is particularly troubling against a team featuring as many dead-eye shooters as the Nets.

It’s a high number but we’re still backing the Over. It doesn’t hurt the Over is 8-1 in the Grizzlies’ last nine road games and 4-0 in the Nets’ last four against teams with winning records.

Prediction: Over 228.5 (-110)

It’s kind of crazy to think about how bad a bet the Nets have been at home this season. They're just 5-13 ATS at Barclays and are a remarkably bad 1-10 ATS in their last 11 as a home favorite.

Brooklyn is obviously about supporting KD and Harden (and now sometimes Kyrie), but when those supports aren’t working - or if the Big 2 go cold - things can go sideways for the Nets. But at the end of the day, this is a team with a couple of megastars that will always be publicly backed.

It just doesn’t feel like they should be laying so many points against a team playing this well that's won 14 of its last 18 games, a stretch that includes them going 7-1 ATS as an underdog.

Pick: Grizzlies +6.5 (-110)
