Nets vs Hawks picks and predictions
Our predictions are compiled from the analysis of the spread and total and are indications of where we are leaning for this game.
Our best bet is the play that we like the most for this game, which we would actually put some of our bankroll behind.
Spread analysis
In the last 13 meetings between the Nets and Hawks, Brooklyn is 11-2 straight-up and 8-5 against the spread. This head-to-head series has been all Nets recently, and everything is pointing to that holding true after this game.
Brooklyn is coming off of a loss to Houston on Wednesday, so this team is going to be hungry to get back in the win column here. The Nets also sat Kevin Durant in that loss, so they’ll have their most important player rested for this one. The Hawks don’t have anybody that can give Durant any trouble on the defensive end, so this seems like a game in which he could sleepwalk his way to 30 points. Meanwhile, Atlanta could run into the same problem with James Harden, as the Hawks are lacking an elite point-of-attack defender at the moment.
Defensively, Brooklyn has the seventh-best defensive rating in basketball and should be somewhat ready to stop Trae Young & Co. Young has progressed this season, as he has begun to master the mid-range game. However, the Nets are going to be somewhat well-covered on the wing, where both Durant and James Johnson are plus-level defenders. And the Nets can throw Bruce Brown on Young for his 20 or so minutes, and that will tire Trae out a bit.
Overall, this is a spot in which the Hawks might draw the sharp money, but it could end just like Brooklyn’s game against the Dallas Mavericks earlier in the week. If the Nets keep it close, Durant will win it for them in crunch time.
Prediction: Nets +2 (-108)
Over/Under analysis
This number appears to be getting higher and higher, so you’ll want to grab it at its lowest and play the Over. While the Hawks might be a bit overmatched in this game, the team is second in the NBA in offensive rating. The Nets are good enough to get the necessary amount of stops in key moments to win this game, but Brooklyn’s defense is struggling a bit coming into this one. That means Atlanta should put up a relatively high number, and the same obviously goes for the Nets. The Hawks are just 24th in the league in defensive rating this year, so they could be in trouble against this loaded Nets squad.
Under head coach Steve Nash, the Over is 9-3-1 when Brooklyn is coming off an upset loss as a road favorite. It’s also 16-8 when the Nets are facing teams that average 7 or fewer steals per game on the year in that span.
Prediction: Over 225.5 (-110)
Best bet
Since Nash took over as Brooklyn’s head coach, the Nets are 13-2 against the spread when coming off back-to-back games against Western Conference opponents. Brooklyn won those games by an average margin of 9.7 points per game, and the Nets have already earned a nine-point win over this Hawks team this year.
It’s also worth noting that Atlanta is 0-4 against the spread when facing good defensive teams that hold opponents to less than 43.0% shooting from the field under head coach Nate McMillan. The Hawks are also just 9-15 straight-up and 8-16 against the spread against teams that win 60.0% to 70.0% of their games in that same span.
Pick: Nets +2 (-108)
