Can an asteroid come crashing down and mercifully make the Toronto Raptors’ season extinct? Please?
The Raptors enter tonight’s game against the Brooklyn Nets having lost 10 games in a row and 12 of their last 13 overall, going 3-10 against the spread over that span.
If you want an idea of how bad things are for the Raptors, look no further than the NBA odds. Toronto is a 6.5-point home underdog against a Brooklyn team that's lost six in a row and is 1-5 ATS in its last six games overall.

Nets vs Raptors predictions
Thank goodness for sports betting because there's no other reason someone should be interested in this game. And I mean even for the most diehard Toronto Raptors fans.
Without Scottie Barnes, Immanuel Quickley, and RJ Barrett, there isn’t much about this current Raps roster you can get behind. Gary Trent Jr. is the elder statesman at the moment, but there have been points when even Trent has been out, making the most tenured Raptor... rookie Grady Dick.
When Scottie, IQ, and RJ were on the court, the Raptors were at the very least fun to watch. Without this trio (not to mention starting center Jakob Poeltl), Toronto’s offense has plummeted and the team is close to unwatchable.
The Raptors have the worst net rating in the NBA during this 10-game losing streak and by a fairly wide margin. Which is part of the reason why the Raptors are two-possession underdogs against a team that only has one win in its last nine games.
Yes, the Brooklyn Nets are 1-8 SU in their last nine games. On top of that, they've lost three of their last four games outright as a favorite. So, can you really have much faith in them despite being in what should be a favorable matchup?
So, in a game that feels unpredictable because of the... let’s face it... lack of talent, let's stick to what we know.
Even before this season went off the rails, the Raptors were a poor defensive team. In fact, since Jan. 1, they have the second-worst defensive rating in the NBA, and that's relatively unchanged over the last 10 games in which they rank 26th. They also rank 25th in opponent effective field goal percentage for the season.
So, to me, that means at least some Nets players are going to get some buckets and I’m looking at Dorian Finney-Smith.
With the recent injury to Cam Johnson, you can expect Finney-Smith to be reinserted into the starting lineup with more opportunities against this bad Raptors defense to boot.
He's averaging 8.7 points per game this season and while he’s hit a bit of a slump the last couple of games, he was averaging 10.2 in the 13 prior games and hit double-digits seven times.
My best bet: Dorian Finney-Smith Over 9.5 points (+100 at PointsBet)
Nets vs Raptors same-game parlay
The Raptors are struggling across the board these days but some of their biggest struggles come on the glass, ranking dead last in rebounding rate over the last 10 games.
Brooklyn's Nic Claxton will be the best rebounder in this game. He's averaging 9.7 for the season and has grabbed double-digit boards in six of his last 10 games. He also grabbed 10 when these teams met a month ago.
On the flip side, the Nets struggle on the perimeter. They rank 20th in opponent made 3-pointers per possession and 24th in opponent 3-point shooting percentage.
One of the lone bright spots for the Raptors is rookie Grady Dick getting a chance to develop and he’s looked better with added minutes. He's a sharpshooter and is starting to let it fly from deep. He’s attempting 6.0 threes per game over his last nine games and has hit 3+ in each of his last two games.

Nets vs Raptors spread and Over/Under analysis
As noted, things have gone from bad to worse for the Raptors. They opened this Atlantic Division matchup as 6-point home underdogs despite the fact the Nets are 1-8 SU and 2-7 ATS in their last nine games overall. Not surprisingly, the Nets have seen the early money, moving the line to Toronto +6.5 as of Monday afternoon.
This spread has “do not bet” written all over it. As bad as the Raptors have been, it’s hard to have faith in a Nets squad that ranks 24th in net rating over its nine-game slump.
The Nets have also been favored four times in the last 11 games. They lost three of them outright. Those losses came against the Grizzlies, the Pistons, and Hornets. The Raps are arguably on par with those teams so while I think Brooklyn wins, I won’t be laying chalk with them either.
The total hit the board at a low of 216.5 and has been bet up to 219.5. Once again, I’m staying away from this bet because I believe there's a high variance of outcomes here.
Yes, the Raptors offense has been terrible lately, and we’ve cashed a bunch of team total Unders in the process, but books have seemingly adjusted and their team total for this game is 106.5.
That's a number I wouldn’t mind taking against a solid defense, but the Nets rank in the bottom third of the NBA. With two subpar defensive units, I’d tend to agree with the early money.
