Lost in the shuffle
It appears the first victim of James Harden’s ball-hogging ways in Philadelphia is new teammate Tobias Harris. The 76ers small forward has seen his usage take quite a hit in Harden’s first two games with the team. Will that continue when the Sixers host the New York Knicks tonight?
Everyone knows Harden dominates the ball, so there were obviously going to be some players to take a step back in usage. And right now, that’s Harris. The veteran forward was averaging 15 field goal attempts per game before Harden showed up. Now, it’s down to 9.0 in Harden’s first two games with the Sixers.
In those games, Harris has put six and 12 points, respectively, with the 12 coming in Sunday’s game against this same Knicks team. And while the Knicks have a ton of issues, they still do a decent job of getting a hand in your face on the defensive end, ranking seventh in the NBA in opponent field-goal percentage.
This isn’t the game where Harden is suddenly going to start noticing Harris — even if he is wide open in the corner. And with Harris putting up 12 points or fewer four times in his last games we like the odds that stays below his 15.5-point total in this one.
Pick: Tobias Harris Under 15.5 points (+100)
Domantas the dominator
Does anyone else feel bad that Domantas Sabonis got traded to the Sacramento Kings? We can only hope they don’t waste another talented player. But for now, Sabonis is giving his all and doing it all for the Kings, and he’ll look to keep that up when Sacramento visits the New Orleans Pelicans tonight.
Not only has Sabonis become a top scoring option for the Kings since coming over from the Indiana Pacers but he has been a monster on the boards (as expected) and he has been dishing out the dimes. Sabonis is averaging 13.9 rebounds and 5.9 assists over seven games as a member of the Kings.
Now, the Pelicans are a good rebounding team and have a big man in Jonas Valanciunas who can match up with Sabonis, but the Pels’ makeup resembles that of the Denver Nuggets, another strong rebounding team with a pretty good big man. In back-to-back games against the Nuggets, Sabonis went for 14 rebounds and five assists, and then 16 boards and seven assists.
Sabonis has gone Over this number of 17.5 in six of his seven games as a member of the Kings. He’s a good bet to go Over it once again.
Pick: Domantas Sabonis Over 17.5 assists + rebounds (-110)
Threes a Crowder
Life without Chris Paul is going to be tough for the Phoenix Suns. Luckily, they have great depth and a 6.5-game lead on the Golden State Warriors for the top spot in the Western Conference.
But while they wait for Paul’s return, others will have to step up in his absence. One of those guys will be Jae Crowder. With Paul sidelined, the Suns will look to lean on the veteran small forward not only for his leadership but his 3-point shooting prowess.
Crowder is an average 3-point shooter, hitting just 34.8% of his attempts, but he has come out of the All-Star break with a hot hand, hitting a ridiculous 53.3% of his attempts in the first three games without Paul.
Now, Crowder gets a matchup with a Portland Trail Blazers team that is one of the worst in the NBA when it comes to defending the perimeter. The Blazers (still without Dame Lillard) rank next-to-last when it comes to opponent 3-point shooting percentage while ranking 23rd in opponent 3-point attempts per game.
Crowder has hit at least two threes in each of the first three games since the All-Star break. Bet him to continue to shoulder more of the load with Paul out and go Over his made threes total of 1.5 in this one.
Pick: Jae Crowder Over 1.5 made threes (-130)
