The Mavericks and Hawks will play their season opener tonight and while the biggest storyline might be the battle between superstars Luka Doncic and Trae Young, these teams have strong supporting casts that deserve attention — including Atlanta forward De'Andre Hunter.

The 23-year-old is Atlanta's best two-way player but was banged up most of last year and is recovering from offseason knee surgery. Hunter played in the Hawks' final preseason game last Thursday and showed what he's capable of when healthy, hitting 7-of-12 shots for 19 points — without committing a single turnover in 29 minutes versus the Heat.

Despite an injury-plagued campaign in 2020-21, Hunter still averaged 15 points in 29.5 minutes per game. And in the 18 regular-season games where he was healthy enough to start and not leave early with an injury, he scored fewer than 14 points only four times.

Pick: De'Andre Hunter Over 12.5 points (-125 at DraftKings)

The Heat will begin their season by hosting the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks. These teams are very familiar with each other after meeting in the playoffs in each of the last two seasons. The Heat were swept when they last faced off in May and they're hoping that the offseason addition of Kyle Lowry will help them close the gap.

While Lowry scored at a relatively high clip with the Raptors in each of the last two years, he's at his best when facilitating for others. In Miami, he'll be surrounded by a plethora of talented scorers, including Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro, and Duncan Robinson, which should see his scoring numbers dip.

The preseason certainly suggested that, as Lowry led the team with 6.0 assists per game in 22.1 minutes but put up just 6.5 ppg. Expect Lowry to take fewer shots with his new squad and back the Under on his points total.

Pick: Kyle Lowry Under 16.5 points (-120 at PointsBet)

Paul George will be expected to carry a heavy workload for the Clippers at the start of the season while Kawhi Leonard recovers from ACL surgery. While PG-13 should see a very high usage rate, will be expected to handle the ball more, and should score at a high clip, the Over/Under of 8.5 for his rebound total seems a tad too high.

Sure, the Golden State Warriors aren't great on the boards, but George pulled down 6.6 rebounds per game last season, after averaging 5.7 rpg the previous year. And if you think his rebounding role might increase with Kawhi out, keep in mind that he has averaged 6.5 rpg in 22 regular-season games for the Clips without Leonard in the lineup.

Pick: Paul George Under 8.5 rebounds (-125 at DraftKings)
