The Toronto Raptors’ remaining schedule couldn’t be much friendlier, but draft implications loom large, just as they do for the San Antonio Spurs.
Though Toronto will be without a few key starters again here, my Spurs vs Raptors predictions expect a spirited effort from the hosts and standout performances from two rookies in this matchup.
Read on for my NBA picks and betting angles for this March 23 battle.
Raptors vs Spurs prediction
My Raptors pick: Jamal Shead Over 10.5 points (+100 at PointsBet Canada)
My analysis
With Immanuel Quickley resting, the Toronto Raptors will likely move Jamal Shead back into the starting five tonight — and Shead hasn’t looked out of place when sharing the floor with Scottie Barnes and R.J. Barrett this season.
The rookie point guard has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of Toronto’s focus on player development over results, and I like the Over on his points prop tonight against the San Antonio Spurs.
Shead has hit the Over on this 10.5 number in three of the last four games where he’s played at least 27 minutes, and that’s the kind of workload in store for him here. He’s also made eight of his past 17 triples after an icy start to the month.
Darko Rajakovic has been comfortable scaling back the minutes for his best scorers, so don’t be surprised if Barnes and Barrett aren’t big factors in the fourth quarter — and someone has to step up to support that duo. Given the players available, Shead stands out as a steady No. 3 option.
San Antonio has leaned into smaller lineups in its last two contests, and that should give Shead more opportunities to finish in the paint, where Victor Wembanyama would usually be lurking. The Spurs have cratered without Wemby, giving up 140+ points in three of their last 11 games.
The Raptors clearly see Shead as an important future piece as the backup to Quickley, and they’re giving him every opportunity to get the reps he’ll need for that role. So far, Shead has passed every test, and I see him shining for the hosts again tonight.
Raptors vs Spurs same-game parlay
Just as Shead is seeing an expanded role at times for Toronto, Stephon Castle has embraced his ever-growing opportunities in San Antonio. With De’Aaron Fox injured and no reason to pile heavy minutes on Chris Paul, Castle has been in red-hot form this month.
He’s averaging 20.4 ppg in March and scored 22+ points in seven of his past 12 outings. Castle was in playmaking mode against the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday, dishing 14 dimes, but I’m grabbing the Over on this points prop for my SGP tonight.
I’m also riding with the Toronto moneyline. The Raptors have won six of the past seven meetings between these teams — covering the spread in each of those victories — and they’re 42-27-1 ATS this year.
While the Spurs have a balanced offense, their defensive flaws have been glaring lately, and 16 of Toronto’s 24 wins this season have come at Scotiabank Arena.
If Barnes continues his strong recent play — like his 29-point, 10-rebound effort against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday — the hosts may not be able to let this one slip away in the fourth quarter.
