Kansas vs Oklahoma State Odds, Picks and Predictions: Jayhawks Own Matchup With Cowboys

Kansas has owned this matchup with Oklahoma State in recent meetings. And while things have been up and down for the Jayhawks at times, the Cowboys have fared far worse in conference play. Our betting picks aren't playing contrarian.

If you’re an Oklahoma State Cowboys player or fan, bad news comes in threes. They’ve lost three in a row, are 0-3 in Big 12 play, and now must host the No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks tonight.

The Jayhawks rebounded from their first conference loss of the year against UCF with a win over Oklahoma last time out and they’re 6-point favorites in the college basketball odds.

Kansas has dominated this head-to-head, having won five straight and nine of the last 10. See below for my college basketball picks for Kansas vs. Oklahoma State on Tuesday, January 16.

Kansas vs Oklahoma State picks and predictions

There’s no getting around the Big 12 this year. The conference is stacked, with eight teams currently ranked inside the Top 25 and three inside the Top 10.

The Kansas Jayhawks put together its best effort in a conference game, downing the ninth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners last time out. Their defense held the Sooners to just 29 second-half points, breaking open a 1-point game at the half to win 78-66.

On the year, Kansas is allowing just 66.3 points per game (68th in college basketball) and limiting teams to 39.1% shooting from the field (20th). Overall, the Jayhawks rank 11th in KenPom’s defensive efficiency metric. The Oklahoma win was the most breathing room they’ve had as they opened conference play by sneaking past TCU 83-81 before getting stunned by Big 12 newcomer UCF 65-60.

While Kansas sits in a logjam near the top of the conference, the Oklahoma State Cowboys, who are winless in Big 12 action, sit at the very bottom.

Their latest loss was a total power outage, getting clamped by the Iowa State Cyclones 66-42. OKST shot a dismal 15-for-47 from the field, a 31.9% clip, including a rough 7-for-24 night from downtown (29.2%).

For a team that’s scoring just 72.8 points per game (239th), the loss represents the lowest scoring output of the year for the Cowboys. Scoring has been a problem in this head-to-head with the Jayhawks. Oklahoma State’s defense is solid, limiting teams to 68.1 points per game, but Kansas counters by averaging 78.5 points on an efficient 50.2% shooting from the field, a Top-10 mark in college hoops.

KU has covered four of the last five wins vs. the Cowboys, three of those at Tuesday’s line of 6.5 points or higher. Look for that trend to continue.

My best bet: Kansas -6.5 (-110 at DraftKings)

Kansas vs Oklahoma State same-game parlay

Kansas -6.5

Hunter Dickinson Over 10.5 rebounds

Kevin McCuller Over 3.5 assists

100% boost available

Almost no same-game parlay involving the Jayhawks should be made without including graduate transfer Hunter Dickinson. The former Michigan Wolverine has been a star in the middle for Kansas, as his 12 rebounds per game ranks fourth in college hoops. Last time out, he went for 24 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocks against Oklahoma, his seventh double-double since Dec 1 (a span of nine games).

Dickinson’s rebounding line for Tuesday is 10.5, a figure he has crossed in six of his last eight, and one he's has failed to eclipse just six times in 16 games. The Cowboys will try to contain the 7-foot-2 Dickinson with centers Brandon Garrison and Mike Marsh, with Isaiah Miranda perhaps getting more burn. They’ve been outrebounded in all three Big 12 games they’ve played so far, and I expect Dickinson to spearhead a fourth.

Let’s wrap this up by taking part in senior Kevin McCullar’s all-around game. The guy is averaging 4.5 assists and his line is set at a very reasonable 3.5. McCullar has had at least four dimes in six of his last eight and in 11 of 16 overall.

Kansas vs Oklahoma State spread and Over/Under analysis

The spread has gone as high as 7.5 points, and has never dipped below six.

Neither team has been a good bet against the spread. Oklahoma State has gone 4-11-1 ATS, while the Jaayshawks have covered just six of 15 contests on the year.

There’s been slight variance on the total, as you can grab this as low as 137.5 points, but no books have gone higher than 139.5. Each of Oklahoma State's last six home games against ranked opponents has produced a total of 141 points or better.
