Against the spread (ATS) pick
Boise State is a Group of Five powerhouse that has finished in the Top 25 of the AP and coaches polls in 13 of the last 18 years, but they could be in a tough spot on Thursday night. After a promising freshman year in 2019, Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier was poised for a huge season but has missed the last two games due to an undisclosed injury.
Thankfully for Broncos bettors, they had a backup named Jack Sears who transferred from a little school called USC (you may have heard of it). Sears was outstanding for Boise State against Air Force and was off to a sizzling start against BYU before being knocked out in the first quarter with a concussion—then everything fell apart for the Broncos.
Third-string freshman QB Cade Fennegan wasn't terrible, but he was an obvious downgrade and their defense surrendered 573 yards and 51 points. While the Rams offense isn't on BYU's level, they are a competent group led by veteran passer Patrick O'Brien.
Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin is notoriously vague about the status of his injured players, which makes this a tough line to bet, but if neither Bachmeier nor Sears is ready to go consider fading the Broncos. Keep in mind that Colorado State covered as a 13.5-point underdog against Boise State last November, so we could experience some deja vu on Thursday.
PREDICTION: Colorado State +13.5 (-110)
Over/Under pick
Colorado State's offense was efficient last week but it was hardly explosive, totaling just 344 yards of offense after putting up 372 yards the previous week against Fresno State.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Rams surrendered 348 passing yards to Fresno State and 321 to Wyoming. However, the Broncos could have a difficult time taking advantage of that porous secondary with Fennegan throwing the ball.
With the Under going 25-11 in Boise State's last 36 home games and the Under cashing in five of Colorado State's previous six contests overall, we're leaning towards this game going Under the high total of 62.5.
PREDICTION: Under 62.5 (-110)
First Quarter Bet
Boise State allowed BYU to score on the first drive of the game in their previous contest, and also got off to a slow start against Air Force in their second game of the season, surrendering 14 points in the first quarter.
Colorado State jumped out to a quick lead against Wyoming last week, leading 14-0 after 15 minutes. Take the underdogs on the first-quarter spread.
PREDICTION: First Quarter Colorado State +6 (-110)
