It was billed as the Game of the Year and it delivered as the Alabama Crimson Tide held off a furious comeback attempt by the Georgia Bulldogs to snare the No. 1 spot in the AP rankings. It also cemented Jalen Milroe's status as a Heisman Trophy odds contender.

Milroe is now in charge in the Heisman odds over Cam Ward of Miami, while Travis Hunter has climbed the board following another big effort on both sides of the ball for Colorado.

Let's look at the latest college football odds to win the 2024 Heisman Trophy.

2024 Heisman Trophy odds favorites

Jalen Milroe (+200 to +250)

Jalen Milroe had by far his biggest game through the air this season when he went for 374 passing yards and two touchdowns vs. Georgia's vaunted defense. The Alabama signal caller completed a season-high 81.8% of his passes while tallying two touchdowns with his arm and two more with his legs.

If the Crimson Tide give him that kind of latitude for the rest of the season, it will be hard to deny Milroe this award.

Cam Ward (+500)

Though Cam Ward threw two interceptions in a close-shave victory over Virginia Tech, it's not as though he was a liability.

The Miami Hurricanes quarterback also had 343 passing yards and four touchdowns while scrambling for 57 yards and a score himself.

Even if Miami doesn't have a daunting schedule, Ward can win the Heisman if he maintains this pace.

Travis Hunter (+600 to +700)

Travis Hunter had his 100-yard receiving streak halted at four games with an 89-yard effort vs. UCF but climbed the board nonetheless as he also posted his second interception of the season while allowing only two catches for 25 yards.

Hunter's candidacy as a two-way player is a unique one. He's the first player since Aqib Talib (2007, Kansas) to have multiple games in a season with a touchdown and an interception.

Hunter is by far the biggest liability at BetMGM with the most tickets and betting handle taken in this market.

Notable Heisman odds movement

  • Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty has seen his odds trim from as high as 33/1 to the 10/1 range in the span of two weeks.
  • Jeanty is trying to become the first running back to win the Heisman since Derrick Henry in 2015. The junior is off to an incredible start, averaging over 200 yards per game. He's found the end zone a staggering 13 times already.
  • Jaxson Dart fell down the board following Mississippi's shocking home loss to Kentucky. He's now as long as +2,000 after being +500 last week.

Understanding Heisman Trophy odds

Most sportsbooks will display odds in the American format as listed above. For instance, when Dillon Gabriel had +600 odds during Week 1 of the 2024 season, his odds had a minus (+) sign ahead of the number.

  • Dillon Gabriel (+600)

That meant that a bettor stood to profit $600 for every $100 wagered on Gabriel.

Conversely, if a player had -600 Heisman odds, a bettor would need to wager $600 to make $100. Since this year's race is in the earliest stages, there is no odds-on favorite, and candidates currently have a (+) sign in front of their number.

If American odds aren't your thing, simply use a tool like our odds converter to switch the odds to decimal or fractional format. Most online sportsbooks also give you the option to change the odds format that you see.

Heisman Trophy betting trends

Here are a few trends to keep in mind before placing a bet on college football's biggest individual award.

• Quarterbacks have dominated this award over the last 22 years with 18 Heisman winners playing under center. Only one non-skill position player has ever won this prestigious trophy (Charles Woodson in 1997) and the last wide receiver to take home the award prior to DeVonta Smith was Desmond Howard in 1991.

• The Heisman trophy winner usually comes from a team with a shot at winning the national title. Since 2000, 14 Heisman trophy winners have played for teams that made it to the national championship game (including Reggie Bush, who later had his trophy vacated for breaking NCAA rules). If you're handicapping the Heisman you might want to consider looking at which teams have the best chance of winning the title on the NCAA futures odds board.

• Even though DeVonta Smith won the Heisman in 2020, he is one of only four seniors to win the Heisman in the last 16 years. Over that span, two freshmen, five sophomores, and five juniors have claimed the prize.
