Against the Spread (ATS) Pick
Bowling Green struggled through a rebuilding year in 2019, finishing with a 3-9 record and an average scoring margin of minus-28.5 points per game against FBS foes, the second-worst mark in the county. One of the Falcons' few bright spots was a victory versus Toledo, but they couldn't duplicate that success this year as they opened their season by getting stomped 38-3 by the Rockets.
Kent State opened their season on a better note, edging Eastern Michigan by a score of 27-23. The Golden Flashes began to show flashes (sorry, I couldn't help myself) towards the end of 2019 in Sean Lewis' second year as head coach. Kent State closed the season going 5-0 ATS and 4-0 SU, which included a Frisco Bowl victory over Utah State.
Bowling Green had one of the worst defenses in the nation a year ago, surrendering 503.3 yards and 41.8 points per game against FBS opponents. They returned six starters on D and promptly gave up 524 yards to Toledo in their season opener.
That could spell trouble for the Falcons against an explosive Kent State offense led by dual-threat quarterback Dustin Crum. Crum completed 69.2 percent of his passes for 2,662 yards, 20 touchdowns and two interceptions while adding another 707 yards and six scores on the ground in his first year as a starter in 2019.
The Golden Flashes' momentum from the end of last season looks to have carried over to this year and has us liking them to win and cover on Tuesday.
PREDICTION: Kent State -18.5 (-110)
Over/Under Pick
As bad as Bowling Green was on the defensive side of the ball last year, the Golden Flashes weren't much better, surrendering 477.4 yards and 32.6 points per game to FBS foes.
That said, Kent State showed a ton of improvement against Eastern Michigan last week, holding them to just 61 yards rushing on 32 carries while sacking Eagles QB Preston Hutchinson four times and picking him off twice.
Bowling Green was also atrocious on offense in 2019, mustering just 13.3 points per game, and that inept attack has made them a gift for Under bettors over the last year and a half.
The Under is 14-4 in Bowling Green's last 18 games, and the brutal 20 mile-per-hour winds on Tuesday night could hinder their passing game even more. Take the Under.
PREDICTION: Under 59.5 (-110)
Team Total Prop
To say that Bowling Green's new starting QB Matt McDonald got his season off to a bad start last week would be an understatement. The redshirt junior who transferred over from Boston College completed just eight of 30 passes for 128 yards and a pair of interceptions against Toledo.
The Falcons running game, which was supposed to be a strength with the return of running back Andrew Clair, couldn't get much done either, leading to 21 minutes of possession and a total of three points.
With the Golden Flashes stop-unit looking solid in their season opener, look for another rough outing from BGSU's offense and take the Under on their team total.
PREDICTION: Bowling Green team total Under 20.5 (-110)
