I’m not sure when the West Virginia Mountaineers decided that they invented “Horns down,” but their proclivity for acting as if simply flipping the Longhorns’ signature hand signal upside-down is a result of their sheer brilliance is an insult to those of us invested in college football betting. We all know that Oklahoma has been doing it for decades, so maybe if the ‘Eers re-write “Country Roads” in a manner that doesn’t sound like a 4th grader put Crayon to paper, I’ll give them full credit for something.

Let’s check out our best college football free picks and predictions for West Virginia at Texas, with kickoff scheduled for Saturday, November 7 at 12:00 ET in Austin.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

The Big 12 continues to be perhaps the most unpredictable conference in the country. West Virginia started the season slow but exploded last week for a 37-10 victory against Kansas State, and the Mountaineers did it with a balanced attack. Jarret Doege threw for 301 yards and two scores while Leddie Brown paced the team with 104 yards on the ground. Defensively, West Virginia also forced three interceptions.

Texas somehow finished off then-No. 6 Oklahoma State 41-34 in Stillwater in overtime with the help of four Cowboys turnovers. Tom Herman is still squarely on the hot seat in Austin, but the Horns now have some much-needed momentum despite being less than impressive on the stat sheet. Once a Heisman favorite, quarterback Sam Ehlinger gutted his way through a 166 yard and three touchdown performance.

Motivation is always a huge factor in this game because the Mountaineers love them some “Horns down,” but they also generally play Texas very tough. Ehlinger’s accuracy has suffered of late, and if it happens on Saturday against an opportunistic defense, West Virginia could pull the outright upset. Instead, I’ll just grab the points.

PREDICTION: West Virginia +6.5 (-110)

Over/Under pick

The Total on his game was immediately bet down 3.5 points, and it’s a very good bet. West Virginia is fourth in the country in total defense, and the Under is 7-0 in the Mountaineers’ last seven. A lot of the value is gone here, but it’s still the right play if you follow the money.

PREDICTION: Under 55 (-110)

Team Total Pick

West Virginia has now scored at least 34 points in three consecutive games, but the Mountaineers must account for Joseph Ossai, who recorded an incredible six tackles for loss against Oklahoma State.

If the Texas linebacker is kept at bay, the ‘Eers can eclipse their team total and maybe even come up with a hand sign of their own.

PREDICTION: West Virginia team total Over 21.5 (-120)
