Blackhawks vs Oilers Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

After losing 6-0 to the Winnipeg Jets in the season-opener, Connor McDavid will bounce back against the lowly Blackhawks tonight. Our NHL picks expect a ton of firepower to be on display from both teams.

The Edmonton Oilers host the Chicago Blackhawks in this Western Conference tilt tonight at Rogers Place. NHL odds have Edmonton as a -385 favorite, while the total sits at 6.5.

My Blackhawks vs. Oilers prediction targets Connor McDavid as an anytime goalscorer.

Read on for my NHL picks for Saturday, October 12.

Blackhawks vs Oilers prediction

My best bet
Connor McDavid anytime goal (+105 at BET99)

My analysis

I want to fade Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Petr Mrazek. He surrendered four goals on 26 shots for a .846 SV% in his debut outing and is now tasked with going against one of the best offenses in hockey.

I'm specifically backing Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid due to how he constantly dominates the Hawks. McDavid has scored eight goals over the past six meetings between these two clubs, which makes sense for the best player in the world facing one of the league’s worst teams.

Not only does he skate on the first line alongside Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Zach Hyman, but McDavid is also one of the triggermen on the team’s first power-play unit. This is one of the best units in the league, and they should find success against a Chicago team that finished 27th last season in penalty-kill percentage.

McDavid was held off the scoresheet entirely in the Oilers’ 6-0 loss to open the campaign, and it's highly unlikely we see this occur two games in a row to start the year, especially against Mrazek and a poor Blackhawks defense.

Blackhawks vs Oilers same-game parlay (SGP)

Connor McDavid 1+ goals

Connor Bedard 1+ assists

Over 6.5

I'm also fading Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner, who got shelled in his first outing this season, surrendering five goals on just 13 shots for a .615 SV%.

Meanwhile, Connor Bedard racked up two assists in the first game of the season and gave his linemates some good opportunities in last night’s loss to the Winnipeg Jets. He is skating on the first line alongside Nick Foligno and Teuvo Teravainen, a trio that boasts 4.34 expected goals per 60 minutes (xGF/60) this season.

That line will be matched up against the Nugent-Hopkins, McDavid, and Hyman trio, which possesses 3.45 expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60) thus far.

Blackhawks vs Oilers opening odds

  • Puck line: Chicago +300 | Edmonton -385
  • Moneyline: Chicago +1.5 (+125) | Edmonton -1.5 (-150)
  • Over/Under: Over 6.5 (-110) | Under 6.5 (-110)

Blackhawks vs Oilers moneyline and Over/Under analysis

  • Edmonton opened as a -385 favorite and remains at that price at the time of writing.
  • I doubt this line reaches the four-dollar mark, but there also will be little action on Chicago.
  • The total opened at 6.5 and also remains at that number.
  • Considering how each of these goaltenders looked in their opening games this season, I think it's more likely this total will reach seven than six.
