Flames vs Senators Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

Flames goalie Dan Vladar had a rough outing against the Lightning recently, but there's reason to suspect that was an outlier. He'll face a ton of shots tonight against the Senators and he'll stop most of them.

The Calgary Flames are skidding along a 1-4-2 stretch and draw a tough opponent in the Ottawa Senators at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Thursday, December 19.

Ottawa is rolling along its own 8-2-1 heater, and No. 1 goalie Linus Ullmark hasn’t lost in regulation during the surge up the standings. Still, our Senators vs. Flames predictions are calling for Calgary starter Dan Vladar to stand on his head.

With the puck drop slated for 9 p.m. ET on Sportsnet West, let's get right to our NHL picks

Flames vs Senators prediction

My Flames pick
Dan Vladar Over 26.5 saves (-105 at BET99)

My Flames analysis

Before a tough go against the Tampa Bay Lightning on home ice last Thursday, Calgary Flames goalie Dan Vladar posted a rock-solid .917 save percentage and 2.14 GAA across his six starts at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

I’m viewing it as more of a blip on the radar than a sign of things to come, and he draws a favorable matchup to pad his saves total tonight. The Ottawa Senators average the fifth-most shots per game (30.6), and they’ve recorded 30 or more in six of their past eight.

The Flames have also surrendered an average of 31.0 shots across their past three home games and have surrendered the sixth most per home game (30.2) for the year, so I anticipate Ottawa finishing north of 30 shots again tonight.

Of course, the Sens have been one of the better 5-on-5 possession teams with a ninth-ranked 51.9 Corsi For percentage and sixth-ranked 52.9% shot share, too.

It all adds up to Vladar seeing plenty of rubber and clearing this saves total tonight.

Flames vs Senators same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 6.0

Dan Vladar Over 26.5 saves

Brady Tkachuk Over 3.5 shots

Sens No. 1 Linus Ullmark is locked in with six consecutive wins and a .972 save percentage, 0.83 GAA, and 2.5 total goals saved above average. So, with the expectation that Vladar will also play well, this is a good spot to target the Under.

Additionally, the Flames are on a 4-7 run to Under at the Scotiabank Saddledome, and the Sens haven't gone Over in seven straight.

The final leg of this same-game parlay turns to Ottawa winger Brady Tkachuk, and he’s recorded four or more shots in 18 of 31 games this season while pacing the NHL in shots (13.68) and ranking third in attempts (24.21) per 60 minutes.

Tkachuk is in the 99th percentile for shots on goal, and he’s also clicked with linemates Josh Norris and Drake Batherson for a 57.3% shot share this season.
