Lane Hutson has taken the league by storm as a rookie, piling up the points while serving as a driving force for Montreal in their surprising quest for a playoff spot.
My Red Wings vs. Canadiens predictions are banking on Hutson to have another big night in a high-stakes Atlantic Division battle.
Let’s dive deeper into my NHL picks for Tuesday, April 8.
Canadiens vs Red Wings prediction
My Canadiens pick: Lane Hutson Over 0.5 assists (-125 at BET99)
My Canadiens analysis
Lane Hutson continues to build on a historically productive rookie season. The dynamic blueliner has piled up 64 points to date, 58 of which have come by way of assist.
Cale Makar is the only defenseman in the NHL with more assists than Hutson this season. Insanity.
Hutson is showing no signs of slowing down. He has totaled 19 assists over his last 20 games, including 11 spanning the past 10 following a day off.
The good times should continue this Tuesday night. The Detroit Red Wings have given up a lot of production to opposing defensemen of late, allowing 31 points over the last 15 games. Only seven teams have conceded more in that span – none of which are playoff bound.
The Red Wings also struggle mightily on the road, where they’ve won just 15 times in 36 tries and conceded an average of 3.25 goals per night.
Digging deeper, the Wings look exploitable across the board. They sit 26th in 5-on-5 shot share over the past 10 games, meaning the Montreal Canadiens should spend plenty of time on the front foot.
They also continue to struggle mightily killing penalties. That’s a recipe for disaster against Hutson, who sits tied for fifth in power play points among defensemen.
Canadiens vs Red Wings same-game parlay (SGP)
Moritz Seider has had a productive shooting campaign, recording multiple shots in 61% of his games.
His hit rate on the road is 7% higher and he averages an extra half an attempt per night, which is likely a byproduct of Detroit not possessing last change and the ability to give Seider the toughest matchup every shift.
Seider has enjoyed plenty of success against the Canadiens, clearing 1.5 shots in two of three this season and 10 of the last 13 dating back a few years.
The volume should continue to be there as the Canadiens rank 29th in defending Seider’s primary shooting zone over the last 10 games.
With Detroit in desperate need of a win to keep their slim playoff hopes alive, Seider will no doubt get a ton of ice time to take advantage of Detroit’s struggles limiting point shots.
Rounding out the parlay is a fade of this Red Wings attack. They’ve scored more than twice in just two of the last six games while the Canadiens have allowed two or less in five straight.
With the ability to control matchups, and a rested Sam Montembeault between the pipes, the Canadiens are in a good spot to limit the damage.
