Canucks vs Stars Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

The Canucks can keep their ultra-slim playoff hopes alive with a win over the Stars, which means they'll be firing on all cylinders to help run up the score. The same goes for a Dallas side chasing Winnipeg for top spot in the standings.

The Vancouver Canucks need a win to keep their faint playoff hopes alive as they visit the Dallas Stars tonight.

There’s no letting up from the Stars’ side, who are desperately trying to track down Winnipeg in the chase for the Presidents’ Trophy. It's no surprise that Vancouver is a distant +183 underdog on the moneyline from the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

Our Canucks vs. Stars predictions and NHL picks think the total is just low enough to tally an Over on Tuesday, April 8.

Canucks vs Stars prediction

My Canucks pick: Over 5.5 (-102 at Pinnacle)

My Canucks analysis
With just five games left to play, the Vancouver Canucks sit eight points out of the second and final wild card in the Western Conference, so it’s going to take some miraculous work to squeeze into the playoffs.

The Canucks have just a single win in their last five games after dropping a 3-2 decision to the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday. They have scored two goals or fewer in three of those games, and they’ll be less than whole up front, with forwards Elias Pettersson and Filip Chytil both out with injuries.

Meanwhile, the Dallas Stars have hit a bump in the road after reeling off seven straight wins. They’ve now lost two straight after dropping a 3-2 OT decision to the Minnesota Wild.

The Stars also have just five games left and trail the Winnipeg Jets by three points for the top spot in the NHL. They still have one remaining game against the Jets, but a win over a struggling Vancouver side would be very helpful in that chase.

However, offense has been a problem lately, as Dallas has scored just five goals over the last two games, but they’re third in the league in scoring at 3.40 goals per contest.

They’ve owned this head-to-head with Vancouver and will look for a fifth straight win against the Canucks, including a 3-game regular season series sweep this year.

Dallas hasn’t had a problem lighting the lamp in both wins, downing Vancouver 4-1 on March 9, and besting Vancouver 5-3 on January 31.

The books have been generous by setting the total at 5.5 goals. Dallas will get its goals, but it's also been susceptible of late, allowing an average of four goals across its last two contests.

Knowing only wins will do, look for Vancouver to open things up offensively — especially if they do fall behind, which increases the chances of more goals.

Canucks vs Stars odds analysis

The Canucks are 0-4 as a moneyline underdog in their last four vs. Dallas. They are 4-6 in their last 10 overall as a moneyline underdog.

Vancouver is 3-1-1 in its last five games at the American Airlines Center.

Dallas has lost two straight as a favorite.
