Capitals vs Flyers Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

Owen Tippett hasn't tallied a goal yet this season but it hasn't been for a lack of effort. The winger is ripping shots with abandon and our NHL picks like him to keep firing on net at a high volume tonight.

The Philadelphia Flyers host the Washington Capitals at the Wells Fargo Center to kick off tonight's Frozen Frenzy. The unusual 6 p.m. start time is the first of 16 games across the NHL.

The Flyers won their first game of the season in a shootout before losing their last four. That hasn’t been for a lack of trying, though, as winger Owen Tippett has consistently been firing pucks towards the net.

Find out why my Capitals vs. Flyers picks expect Tippett to keep shooting pucks on net in by best NHL picks for Tuesday, October 22nd.

My best bet
Owen Tippett Over 3.5 shots on goal (-114 at FanDuel)

My analysis

To say that Philadelphia Flyers winger Owen Tippett has been snakebitten so far this season would be an understatement. He is among the league leaders with 30.5 shot attempts per 60 minutes, per Natural Stat Trick, with 46 attempts through 90 minutes in five games.

Of those 46 attempts, though, 14 have been blocked and 15 others have missed the net. That’s resulted in just 17 shots on goal and zero have touched twine.

Tippett started the season with back-to-back games of two shots on goal with just three total attempts in the opener. Since then, he’s racked up 13 SOG in the last three games while taking nine, 16, and nine total shot attempts, respectively.

Shooting a ton isn’t a new thing for Tippett, whose 25.23 shot attempts per 60 minutes last season ranked third in the league behind only Filip Forsberg and David Pastrnak. That resulted in 13.4 shots per 60, or about 3.57 shots per game given his average ice time.

Tippett had a career-high 289 shots on goal in 78 games last year (3.7 per) with at least four shots in exactly half of those games. He was a tad more trigger-happy at home with 146 shots in 38 games (630 minutes) as opposed to 143 shots in 40 road games (663 minutes).

The winger is still looking for his first goal of the year and he’s shown that he’s not slowing down shooting-wise.

Capitals vs Flyers same-game parlay (SGP)

Owen Tippett 4+ shots on goal

Owen Tippett anytime goal

Matvei Michkov 1+ points

Tippett has hit a few posts this season and had a few other scoring chances barely miss. It’s only a matter of time for Tippett and with two days off ahead of this one, look for him to find the back of the net tonight.

Adding linemate and rookie phenom Matvei Michkov to get a point gets us up to +531. That’s not a bad look at all given the circumstances.
