My analysis

The Calgary Flames unloaded a number of veterans over the past calendar year, including No. 1 goaltender Jacob Markstrom. Rookie Dustin Wolf expects to start tonight, facing a tough challenge in the Vancouver Canucks.

Wolf has plenty of promise, but he’s both undersized and inexperienced. His .893 SV% and 3.16 GAA across 17 games (15 starts) for the Flames last year are nothing to write home about, either.

Additionally, the Canucks were juggernauts at home last season with a 27-9-5 record and a dominant +45 goals differential. Vancouver also posted the sixth-highest expected goals for percentage (53.79%) and a solid 52.2% Corsi For percentage at Rogers Arena.

The highway wasn’t kind to the Flames. Calgary went 17-20-4 on the road with a 45.0 goals for percentage at 5-on-5, and I also question where the goals are going to come from for the Flames.

The Canucks allowed just 1.86 goals and 2.38 expected goals per 60 at 5-on-5 on home ice, and Calgary only scored 2.48 goals and generated 2.47 xGF per 60 on the road.

The Flames will fizzle tonight.

Flames vs Canucks same-game parlay (SGP)

Canucks -1.5

Over 5.5

Samuel Honzek Under 2.5 shots

While I anticipate Vancouver to take care of business, the Canucks will miss No. 1 goalie Thatcher Demko (knee). Projected starter Arturs Silovs has limited experience of his own, and he's posted an underwhelming .898 SV% across nine NHL starts. The Flames will put a goal or two on the board.

Turning to Calgary rookie Samuel Honzek, he’s penciled in on the No. 1 line with Nazem Kadri and Andrei Kuzmenko to start the year. It’s a great spot, but he averaged just 2.6 shots per game last season in the WHL and only recorded four shots and eight attempts across five preseason games this year.

With Vancouver’s solid possession numbers at home and Honzek likely to see top-defense matchups, I’m happy to add the Under 2.5 shots to this same-game parlay.
