A huge win over the Oilers gave the Vancouver Canucks some much-needed separation in the chase for the Pacific Division crown. Now, a win over the other Alberta team can clinch it Tuesday, when the Calgary Flames visit Rogers Arena tonight.

The home team is a -208 moneyline favorite in the NHL odds against a Calgary team that already knows there’s no chase for Lord Stanley in its immediate future.

Do the Flames read as spoilers in the penultimate regular season game for both teams? Read below for my free NHL picks and Flames vs. Canucks predictions below.

My best bet
Andrei Kuzmenko Over 0.5 points (-125 at SportsInteraction)

My analysis
While this game may mean nothing more than pride, pride should be a big factor for Calgary Flames forward Andrei Kuzmenko. Not long ago, he was considered a future building block for the Vancouver Canucks after potting 39 goals as a rookie last season.

Those plans changed after Vancouver shipped him out on Jan 31, as the second-year man struggled with eight goals in 43 games. He was a non-factor in his first meeting with his former team on March 23, held off the scoresheet, and a -1 in a 4-2 loss, but he’s been on fire since.

The 28-year-old is ending the season on a flurry. In Calgary’s 6-5 win over the Coyotes, Kuzmenko had a goal and an assist, giving him points in eight of the Flames’ last nine games.

They’re coming in bunches too: Kuzmenko's recorded multi-point games in seven of the contests, tallying nine goals and 16 points over that span. That includes his second career hat-trick and first with the Flames, tallying three goals in a 6-2 win over the Ducks on April 12. He’s now up to 22 goals and 45 points on the year.

His hot streak coincides with Vancouver’s plan to reintegrate starting goalie Thatcher Demko in the lineup Tuesday after missing the previous 14 games with injury.

Vancouver’s last two regular season games are a chance for the netminder to get right before Round 1 of the playoffs, where he’s expected to get his starting job back and push Casey DeSmith back to the backup role.

That makes it a perfect time for Vancouver’s one-time blue-chipper to help the Flames light the lamp in a game where they can only play spoiler.

Flames vs Canucks same-game parlay (SGP)

Andrei Kuzmenko Over 0.5 points

Elias Pettersson anytime goalscorer

Over 5.5

With no points option for an SGP, we’ll switch Kuzmenko to an anytime goal against his former team. As for the current Canucks, let’s focus our attention on Elias Pettersson, who has hit the 30-goal plateau for his third consecutive campaign.

Petterson was held off the scoresheet in Vancouver’s 3-1 win over the Oilers, snapping a four-game point streak where he had a goal and three assists. The Swede is a certified Flames douser, putting up points in 11 of his last 13 against Calgary.

He went pointless in the last meeting between these teams, snapping a 5-game goal streak against the Flames. He has eight goals in his last 10 against them.

We’ll wrap this by taking the Over, which we optioned out at 5.5 goals. That’s a figure these teams have crossed in eight of the last 10 head-to-head matchups. Calgary has hit the Over in two straight, while the Canucks have cashed the Over in five of the last seven.
