The Calgary Flames and Philadelphia Flyers opened their seasons similarly, both trailing early and picking up comeback victories in extra time against the Vancouver Canucks.
My Flyers vs. Flames predictions see Calgary building on a strong offensive performance in its opener, with its most dangerous players finding the scoresheet once again.
Let’s break it all down with my October 12 NHL picks.
Flyers vs Flames prediction
My best bet
Andrei Kuzmenko Over 0.5 points (-125 at BET99)
My analysis
Andrei Kuzmenko has found his footing with the Calgary Flames, consistently landing on the scoresheet by producing 26 points through 30 games since joining the club via trade from Vancouver last January. He enters play having picked up at least one point in eight of his past 10 games, including the season opener vs. his former team.
Kuzmenko finds himself in an advantageous spot to keep the ball — er, puck — rolling offensively in Calgary’s first home game of the campaign.
The Flames will welcome a Philadelphia Flyers squad that missed the playoffs last season — in part due to underwhelming goaltending — and didn’t do much to change the mix.
The Flyers were in action Friday night and controlled only 32% of the scoring chances at 5-on-5. Put another way, they spent plenty of time in the defensive zone.
Philadelphia is not an overly deep team, so there will be mismatches to exploit. With last change in head coach Ryan Huska’s back pocket, the Flames can get Kuzmenko’s line out against lesser competition and put him in optimal situations to produce.
Kuzmenko should be involved in the buildup of plenty of scoring chances — chances Ivan Fedetov will probably struggle to stop.
Fedetov did not look sharp during his cup of coffee in the NHL last season. He didn’t exactly put any concerns to rest in preseason play, either, posting a putrid .873 save percentage across four appearances.
Look for Kuzmenko to make something happen offensively against a mediocre team with real questions in goal.
Flyers vs Flames same-game parlay (SGP)
If Kuzmenko is involved in a Calgary goal, there’s a good chance Nazem Kadri will be as well. The veteran center is Kuzmenko’s running mate at even-strength as well as on the top power-play unit.
Kadri has 14 points over his last 10 games and 33 in 30. He has also been extremely efficient on home ice, finding the scoresheet at least once in 22 of the past 30 in Calgary.
On the other side, dynamic rookie Matvei Michkov is worth backing. The Flyers generated a team-leading 11 scoring chances with Michkov on the ice in Vancouver.
His shooting factored heavily into those numbers. Michkov recorded five shot attempts, four shots on goal, three scoring chances, and a pair of rebound opportunities. He has the flash and dash skill but is also willing to go to the dirty areas of the ice. I like his chances of picking up the first point of his career in short order.
