Flyers vs Rangers Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Hitting Unders With Strong Goaltending

The Flyers are off to a hot start and have done a great job at mitigating opponent scoring. This has less to do with strong defense and more with the play of Carter Hart. He may not gift Philly a win against the Rangers, but scoring won't be robust.

The New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers are set for their first meeting of the season. These two Metropolitan division rivals have had lopsided affairs over the past few seasons, as the Rangers took three out of the four contests last year, but the Flyers have been off to a pretty decent start to this campaign.

Our NHL betting picks and predictions for Flyers vs. Rangers get to the bottom of how this renewed rivalry will shake out, particularly in the opening frame, on Tuesday, November 1.

Flyers vs Rangers picks and predictions

Carter Hart has been the story thus far for the Philadelphia FlyersHart is 5-0-1 with a .938 SV% and a 2.31 GAA along with a +9.0 GSAx and, while I know it’s early, he should definitely be in the discussion for the Vezina trophy right now.

The Flyers have gotten off to slow starts in most of their contests as they are only generating 8.50 shots on goal in the first period and averaging 0.75 goals in the opening frame. The Flyers have only scored two first-period goals in their last three games.

The New York Rangers have been a little better in the first 20 minutes, generating an average of 11.50 shots on goal, but they haven’t been able to convert as much as they are only averaging 0.60 goals in the first period and have scored just one first-period goal in their last three games.

This will be the Rangers' third game in four nights, so they might not come flying out of the gates. Either Igor Shesterkin or Jaroslav Halak will have to be at their best early on. Last season, the Under hit in three out of the four games between these two teams, so we should expect another low-scoring affair between two divisional rivals. Due to how slowly these squads have been starting, I especially like the Under in the first period.

My best bet: First period Under 1.5 (-110 at BetMGM)

Flyers vs Rangers moneyline analysis

The Flyers are only allowing 2.63 goals per game, but none of that has to do with the blue line, it is all Hart. The Flyers are actually somewhat of a mess defensively, allowing 35.9 shots on goal per game, so I expect this high-powered Rangers offense to expose Philadelphia’s weaknesses.

The Rangers need to find ways to play a bit more consistently, but Artemi Panarin has been carrying this team on his back. Panarin has five goals and 11 assists in just 10 games, which has him as the third-highest point scorer in the league right now. Panarin has been driving the bus offensively for the Rangers, but they have also gotten key contributions from Mika Zibanejad, Vincent Trocheck, Chris Kreider, and Adam Fox

Philadelphia hasn’t been nearly as good on the offensive end as the Rangers, ranking in the bottom of the league when it comes to generating scoring chances and actually converting on those chances. The superstars for the Rangers should be able to dominate and continue the success they have had over the past few seasons against the Flyers. I think the Rangers take care of home ice.

Flyers vs Rangers Over/Under analysis

The Rangers and Flyers have not been at their best offensively this season. The Rangers are currently averaging 3.10 goals per game and the Flyers are just averaging a flat 3.00.

The Flyers have really been struggling in the offensive department, ranking as the third-worst team in the league in expected goals percentage (41.14%) and expected goal differential (-5.79). The Rangers haven’t been as good as they can be on the defensive end, but the Flyers are the perfect opponent for them to get back on track.

The Rangers are allowing just 3.00 goals against per game, which isn’t bad, but not as good as they were last season, which they are more than capable of getting back to.

In the last seven meetings between these two teams, the Under has hit six times. Whenever divisional rivals get together, the games are generally played a little tighter and I think that will be the case again tonight with this game hitting the Under.
