The Vegas Golden Knights are off to a terrific start. They own a 9-3-1 record through 13 games and have posted a better goal differential than all but two teams in the NHL.
Although Jack Eichel’s return to superstardom has factored heavily into the team’s resurgence, his shooting hasn't necessarily taken center stage.
My Golden Knights vs. Kraken predictions see Eichel’s volume continuing downward in a slow-paced matchup vs. Seattle. Let’s look closer at my NHL picks for Friday, November 8.
Golden Knights vs Kraken prediction
My best bet
Jack Eichel Under 3.5 shots (-130 at FanDuel)
My analysis
Jack Eichel is off to an outstanding start but his shooting doesn’t have much to do with it. While the Vegas Golden Knights center is on pace for 25 goals, he is averaging just 2.5 shots per game on 5.0 attempts.
This version of Eichel is completely different from the one we saw a year ago. Last season saw Eichel produce at a 40-goal pace while being a big-time shooter, generating 4.3 shots per game on 7.0 attempts.
He has remained equally as effective as a player — if not more so — but shooting hasn’t been a big part of the package this season.
Eichel’s volume drop is especially noticeable on the road. He has averaged 1.6 shots on 3.8 attempts and failed to record four shots in all five games outside of Vegas.
While Eichel has faced some less-than-ideal opponents for shot generation, a date with the Seattle Kraken isn’t much of a step in the right direction.
The Kraken started the season playing a faster brand of hockey, but they’ve since sunk back into the rather low-event style we’ve grown accustomed to. Seattle ranks 25th in even-strength pace on the season and 30th when isolating the past 10 games. There just isn’t much going on at 5v5, creating a poor shooting environment for Eichel.
The Kraken tend to struggle with discipline at times, but that won’t necessarily lead to a spike in shot volume for Eichel. Mark Stone is the only player on Vegas’ top unit who has attempted fewer shots on the power play than Eichel, who has zero goals and six assists in such situations.
Eichel continues to be priced as he was when his volume was much higher on a nightly basis. We should act accordingly.
Golden Knights vs Kraken same-game parlay (SGP)
Pavel Dorofeyev should be one of the prime beneficiaries of squaring up against a penalty-prone Kraken team. He is a terrific shooter who is being spoon-fed the puck on the man advantage. He’s made the most of his opportunities, leading the Golden Knights in power-play goals and scoring more efficiently than all but Dylan Larkin league-wide.
If the Kraken can’t stay out of the box, Dorofeyev is going to get a lot of extra touches in the halfcourt.
Meanwhile, Alex Pietrangelo has blocked two shots or fewer in four of five road games thus far. This is not a good matchup to buck that trend. The Kraken rank 30th in 5v5 pace over the past 10 games and 30th in 5v5 shot generation. They also sit 23rd on the power play during the same period of play.
Seattle plays slow and doesn't generate much shot volume, which means there shouldn’t be many opportunities for Pietrangelo to put his body on the line.
