We’ve got nine games on the NHL slate tonight, including a clash between two Eastern Conference foes as the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Carolina Hurricanes, with enticing NHL player props to target.
The NHL odds suggest the Maple Leafs should narrowly win tonight, but a red-hot Hurricanes power play should factor into the final result.

Hurricanes vs Maple Leafs odds
Hurricanes vs Maple Leafs predictions
The Toronto Maple Leafs enter tonight on a losing note after losses to Ottawa and Columbus coming out of the Christmas break. Meanwhile, the Carolina Hurricanes have won both games since returning from the holiday hiatus, with victories over Montreal and Nashville.
Betting on the Leafs has proven to be a difficult task this season based on the unpredictability of which team is going to show up on any given night. So tonight, I think it may be wise to take a look at the other side and focus on a Hurricanes prop.
Enter Sebastian Aho.
Aho has been one of the hottest players in the NHL with 17 points over his last 10 games, ranking fourth in the league in that time span. Of those 17 points, however, nine have come while on the man advantage. This is where I see value in the prop market tonight.
Overall, the Canes power play has been on fire of late, operating at a 50% clip over their last five games and going 9-for-18 in that span.
Aho is getting +240 odds to go Over 0.5 power play point tonight, a prop he’s cashed in four of his last five games. In those five games, he’s scored three times himself, with five additional helpers for a whopping eight total points on the man advantage.
From a matchup perspective, Aho faces a Maple Leafs team that has struggled defensively and in goal, which has impacted its penalty kill percentage lately. Over their last 10 games, the Buds rank 21st in the league on the PK with just a 76% success rate.
So, with the Maple Leafs struggling defensively and Toronto’s penalty kill hitting a rough patch recently, coupled with a red-hot Canes power play that’s been led by Aho, I like for him to get a point on the man advantage tonight.
My best bet: Sebastian Aho Over 0.5 power play points. (+210 at SIA)

Hurricanes vs Maple Leafs same-game parlay
For the first leg of my same-game parlay, we’ll bet an anytime goal on a former Maple Leafs player who happens to be on Carolina’s first power play unit: Michael Bunting. The Canes forward has seven goals this year, with four of them coming on the power play. Plus, it certainly feels like GTA-born former Maple Leafs love to score revenge goals on Toronto. He’ll be motivated to get one in the back of the net tonight and should have chances now that he’s in Carolina’s top six and playing on the top PP unit.
Next up, let’s take Carolina at +1.5 on the spread. Fading the Leafs as puckline favorites has been a sharp play all season, as they’re just 9-23 ATS on the year. The Leafs are favored to win, but they have rarely won by two or more goals this year. Plus, they’re playing on the second night of a back-to-back, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Carolina come out victorious, and getting the hook allows for any overtime result to cash the prop.
For my final leg, let’s roll with an anytime goal from Auston Matthews. It’s been the best bet on the board all month long, as he’s scored in nine of eleven December games, totaling a league-leading 15 goals in that stretch. With Carolina giving up just over three goals a game on average, there’s a good chance Matthews buries one of them.

Hurricanes vs Maple Leafs moneyline and Over/Under analysis
The Toronto Maple Leafs are slight home favorites tonight at -115 odds, with the Carolina Hurricanes entering as -105 road dogs. The Leafs are playing on the second night of a back-to-back, with a fresh Hurricanes team presumably waiting for them already in Toronto. The Leafs are 2-1 in their three previous back-to-backs this year, with a +6 goal differential in those games. But betting on the Leafs moneyline has been a roller-coaster ride this season. Canes puckline may be the better play, as outlined in my SGP.
The total for tonight’s game is sitting at 6.0 goals, with the favored side being the Over at -135, while the Under is offering plus-money (+110). Leafs games have had an average of 7.03 goals combined in them, while the Canes are averaging 6.47. Either way you slice it, the numbers suggest the play is on the Over, as do the trends, with both teams combining for a 54% hit rate on the Over this season.
