Hurricanes vs Stars Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

Jake Oettinger has been a key reason why the Stars have consistently played to the Under in 2024-25, and with Pyotr Kochetkov guarding the cage for the visiting Hurricanes, we won't see many goals at either end.

The Dallas Stars host the Carolina Hurricanes tonight at the American Airlines Center at 8:00 p.m. ET. Dallas is a -130 favorite with the total set at six goals.

The Stars are typically involved in low-scoring games, with six or fewer total goals scored in 20 of their past 24 games. My Hurricanes vs. Stars predictions believe that this trend will continue.

Read on for my NHL picks for Tuesday, January 21.

My analysis

Goaltender Jake Oettinger's play has been a significant factor in the Dallas Stars’ trend of low-scoring games. He boasts a 23-10-1 record with a .914 SV% and 2.26 GAA through 34 starts this season.

Oettinger has allowed two or fewer goals in each of his past four starts, posting a 3-1 record with a .957 SV%. There were five or fewer total goals scored in each of those outings.

This success is likely to continue against the Carolina Hurricanes, a team Oettinger boasts a .922 SV% against through nine career meetings.

Oettinger’s job is made easier by playing behind one of the best two-way teams in the league. Dallas ranks third in xGA/60, highlighting its strong defensive play.

Not that the Canes’ blue line is far behind, given that they rank ninth in the same category. They’ve also received strong goaltending from Pyotr Kochetkov, who sports a .909 SV% over his past seven starts.

With both goaltenders in great form and both teams playing excellent defense, I am confident that the Stars’ trend of low-scoring games will continue.

Hurricanes vs Stars same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 6.5

No goal in 1st five min of 1P

Stars moneyline

There is a strong correlation with the Under cashing if no goals are scored in the first five minutes of the game. Beyond the obvious correlation, this game is particularly likely to see a slow start from Carolina, which is on the second half of a back-to-back following last night’s 4-3 overtime victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

That game is one of the reasons why I like Dallas in this matchup, given that it is the more rested team. Furthermore, the Stars feature the stronger goaltender and also outrank the Hurricanes in xGA/60.
