Islanders vs Flyers picks and predictions
Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.
Moneyline analysis
Though the Islanders’ playoff hopes are dim, they are still playing like they can make up the 18 points that separate them from the Washington Capitals, who have the second wildcard spot. New York has gone 5-0-1 in its last six, defeating the Dallas Stars, 4-2 on Saturday.
Now it leaves home for the quick jaunt to the City of Brotherly Love to face a struggling Philadelphia team. In three previous meetings this season, the Islanders have won all three, 4-1, 4-3, and 4-3.
What has helped the Isles recently is their goaltending. Ilya Sorokin, who is expected to start Sunday, has a GAA of 2.30, sixth best in the NHL. He is second in shutouts with six and fifth in SV% at .926.
Offense has been an issue for the Islanders all season. The team ranks 24th in goals per game at 2.71. They have been much better, however, over their last 10 games, averaging 3.60 gpg.
Brock Nelson has been hot during that period, netting eight goals and three assists, including a hat trick in the Dallas win.
The Flyers have no hope of making the playoffs, mired in a tie for last place in the Metropolitan Division. Philadelphia has begun a fire sale, moving talent ahead of Monday’s trade deadline.
Longtime captain Claude Giroux, who this season was second in goals and points for the Flyers, was traded on Saturday to the Florida Panthers for prospect Owen Tippett and draft picks.
That leaves Cam Atkinson to shoulder the offensive output, leading the team with 23 goals, and James Van Riemsdyk trailing behind for second with 14.
Prediction: Islanders moneyline (-110)
Over/Under analysis
A reenergized Islanders’ offense has been scoring plenty of goals lately, and that trend should continue. Over the last 10 games, New York has scored 28 goals, with eight of those games seeing the team score three or more goals.
Anders Lee has scored nine in that period, Nelson eight, and Kyle Palmieri six.
In the last three games these two teams have played, the Over has hit twice. The Isles scored four goals in all three meetings and the Flyers had three goals in two, and a lone goal in the other.
If the Over is to be achieved, the Flyers are going to have to help a little bit, and despite the lack of offense, they should be able to pot at least one or two tallies. The last time the team was shutout was March 1, since then Philadelphia has scored 23 goals in eight games.
Prediction: Over 5.5 (Odds)
Best bet
The Flyers are a team that is rebuilding. The trade of Giroux was not a surprise, but he was a huge part of the organization and it was felt in the locker room. When the team played the Senators on Friday in a battle of the cellar dwellers, they looked listless, with Atkinson having the lone goal in the loss.
If they looked sluggish just 48 hours ago, how are they going to be against the motivated Islanders, especially when the organization is not done trying to trade talent? Defenseman Justin Braun and forward Derick Brassard may also be gone by Monday.
New York should take advantage of the Flyers’ lack of motivation. Sorokin, who is one of the best netminders in the league, shouldn’t be too tested. In the last game the Flyers played, they had 29 shots on goal.
Philadelphia has gone 4-5-1 in its last 10. Of those five losses, four have had goal differentials of at least two goals. New York should make it six.
