Kings vs Maple Leafs Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Buds Light Up L.A.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will look to continue piling up pucks in the net when the Los Angeles Kings come to town. L.A. has a goaltending problem, and our NHL picks don't expect it to gett fixed tonight in Toronto.

We’ve got a Halloween thriller tonight as the Toronto Maple Leafs return home to host the Los Angeles Kings at Scotiabank Arena.

Both teams are over .500 on the season with high-powered offenses, but NHL odds suggest goaltending will be the difference in tonight’s game.

Find out how in my free NHL picks for the Kings vs. Maple Leafs on October 31.

Kings vs Maple Leafs odds

Kings vs Maple Leafs predictions

The Toronto Maple Leafs are back on home ice after a five-game road trip where they went 3-1-1 while collecting seven of a possible 10 points. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Kings are coming off a shootout loss to the Golden Knights and are now onto leg one of a three-game eastern road trip tonight.

The home side has had the most recent success in this matchup — winning 12 of the last 16 meetings — with Toronto winning four of the last five at Scotiabank Arena. I look for this trend to continue with the Leafs having a banner night offensively and the Kings getting subpar goaltending this season.

Toronto is averaging 4.33 goals per game at home when Sheldon Keefe has the advantage of making the last change. Couple that with Los Angeles' struggles in net, giving up 3.5 per game this season, and it should lead to a high-scoring game for the home side.

Additionally, the Kings have given up four goals in three of their last four games. Goaltending has been an issue. Cam Talbot is the presumed starter and has allowed at least three goals in four of his five starts this season.

A big reason for L.A.'s struggles in net has been primarily due to its troubles stopping shots taken from the high-danger areas (slot/inner-slot). As a team, the Kings rank 31st in 5-on-5 high-danger-save percentage (.743%), and the Leafs average 14.04 shots from that area per game — third in the NHL.

Furthermore, according to NHL Edge, Auston Matthews and John Tavares are first and second in the league, respectively, in slot shots, and they should look to take advantage of this matchup by continuing to get those juicy looks to generate offense.

Another advantage the Leafs have is their power play, which is operating at 40% on home ice. Los Angeles has been undisciplined so far this year, taking a little more than four penalties on average per game.

The Kings haven’t been as sharp on the penalty kill either lately, giving up at least one goal while shorthanded in three of the team’s last four games. This should give the Buds a chance to grab at least one goal on the man advantage en route to the four they need.

My best bet: Maple Leafs team total Over 3.5 (-125 at SIA)

Kings vs Maple Leafs same-game parlay

Maple Leafs TT Over 3.5

Maple Leafs to score first

Over 6.5 goals

I like for the Leafs to score first. The Kings have been slow starters on the road this season, giving up an average of two first-period tallies. Meanwhile, Joseph Woll is getting the start, and he's absolutely dialed in right now and has yet to surrender a goal in the opening frame this season. Plus, it’s a prop that has cashed in four straight games for Toronto.

For the final leg of my parlay, let’s roll with Over 6.5 total goals tonight. I’ve already talked about the L.A.'s goalie woes and how I believe the Leafs can get four or more themselves. Well, Toronto could struggle against the Kings' speed tonight, and they could turn this game into a track meet.

Both of these teams generate a lot of quality scoring chances and sit in the Top 10 in scoring overall. It seems like the sharp betters are expecting a busy night for the goal lamp operators as well, with the Over taking in 86% of the handle so far on just 60% of the bets.

Kings vs Maple Leafs moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Maple Leafs come into tonight’s game as the favorite at -155 odds, with L.A. getting +130 as the road dogs. Toronto is handing the crease back to Woll, who has a .979 SV% in his last three games played with a 1.33 GAA on the season. Talbot will be tested often by Toronto, and it has a more sure-fire offense. I’d lay the juice on the Leafs at home.

The total for tonight’s matchup is set at 6.5 goals, with the Over opening up as the strong favorite at -135 odds, while the Under gets you +110. The Kings have been in a lot of high-scoring games this year, with the Over being 7-1. L.A. plays high-event hockey offensively — leading the NHL in scoring per game — but also can’t keep the puck out of its own net.

Plus, it’s Halloween! Wild and spooky things are expected to happen out there on the ice. Consider the Over.
