Scoring has been down and while it's likely a combination of things, it’s reflected in the totals of late as 6.5s are seemingly a thing of the past. The stacks aren’t stacking, so it’s time to start feeding into the lower-scoring trends.
These are my three favorite NHL props for Wednesday, January 30.
NHL prop picks and best bets for January 30
- Flyers TT u2.5 (+105 at bet365)
- Weegar o2.5 SOG (+136 at FanDuel)
- Sharks TT o2.5 (-113 at FanDuel)
Today’s NHL prop picks and best bets
Flyers team total Under 2.5 (+105 at bet365)
If there is a team to fade tonight, it’s the Philadelphia Flyers. They just wrapped up a home-and-home with the Devils last night in a 5-0 loss where first-liner Owen Tippett exited. It will be Ivan Fedotov in net, which is an advantage for the red-hot New York Islanders.
New York has won five straight games and Ilya Sorokin has stopped 85 of his last 89 shots en route to a 4-0 SU record across his last four games. The visitors also boast the best penalty kill in hockey in January.
The Flyers are also dealing with the illness that is going around so a back-to-back setting could hurt them even more. Over the Islanders' last nine games, their opponent has gone Over this prop just once.
I like this plus-money team total Under better than the Islanders moneyline at -125.
MacKenzie Weegar Over 2.5 SOG (+136 at FanDuel)
Sometimes, when you’re riding a cold streak, it’s always nice to go to something reliable — and that’s an opposing defenseman’s shots on goal vs. the Anaheim Ducks.
The Ducks have consistently been one of the worst SOG% teams in hockey over the last couple of years. Only the Blackhawks have a worse Corsi% at all strengths than the Mallards and plenty of those shot attempts are coming from the opposing blueliners. That puts Calgary Flames PP1 QB MacKenzie Weegar in a great place for a plus-money SOG prop.
The Calgary defenseman is already averaging 2.5 shots per game at home this year and had five SOG vs. the Ducks earlier this month on the road.
Just go through the game logs and see all the success opposing D-men have had against the Ducks. Seattle’s Vince Dunn just had an eight-shot game vs. Anaheim on Tuesday, Roman Josi had four SOG the game before that, and Matt Grzelcyk, Kris Letang, and Erik Karlsson combined for 10 shots (9% of the team’s total) three games ago. Four shots is paying +330 and 5+ is +800 at bet365.
Sharks team total Over 2.5 (-113 at FanDuel)
The San Jose Sharks are live +165 road dogs tonight against the Seattle Kraken, but their close-out skills have scared me of late so taking them on the team total Over 2.5 should be a much less sweatier path.
The Sharks are coming off a 2-1 home win (in regulation) vs. the Pens, which was the first day of the Dad’s Trip that will carry on the road tonight into Seattle who just gave up four goals to the Ducks two days ago.
The Kraken have been leaky of late, giving up 3+ goals in four of their last five and 10 goals across their last two games.
Joey Daccord has been great of late but he also played 10 straight games from January 9 to 27. No goalies these days see that volume. Daccord is 1-4 SU over his last five games returning after a game off.
I love this San Jose team's scoring depth that can roll out two solid lines and this is one of the few games without a game total of 5.5 so some scoring should be expected.
