The San Jose Sharks might not seem like a great hockey team based on what their record shows, but thanks to guys like Mikael Granlund and Macklin Celebrini, they’ve become quite the fun team to watch.
Tonight, the Sharks head into Seattle for a dance with the Kraken, who are heavy favorites. There is great value on an underrated San Jose team as we break down what to watch for in my Sharks vs. Kraken predictions.
Find out why my NHL picks on Thursday, January 30 favors the road team.

My analysis
The San Jose Sharks are coming off of a feel-good win against the Pittsburgh Penguins, while the Seattle Kraken have lost three of their last four games and just put their veteran goaltender, Philipp Grubauer, on waivers. It’s been a disappointing season for Seattle, who are currently sitting at 22-27-3 on the season and are in seventh in the Pacific division.
The Kraken have not been defending very well in the month of January. They’ve allowed 3.43 goals against per game and their penalty kill has been below league-average at a 74.1% success rate.
The Sharks haven’t been defending all that well either as of late, but offensively, they’re scoring goals. Over their last five games, San Jose is scoring 3.40 goals per game. Granlund and Will Smith have both been producing at a point per game rate, not only does Smith have six points in his last five games, but he’s also a +6 which is a team high.
Seattle isn’t really known for their goal-scoring. The Kraken have been struggling to put the puck in this season, they don’t have a single player that is producing at a point per game, and their leading scorer, Jared McCann has 39 points in 52 games played. The Kraken have the fifth-lowest high-danger chances per 60 at 5v5, generating 9.33 per game and they have the fifth-lowest shots on goal per game (26.6).
The Kraken have not been a very good team on home ice, skating to a 12-12-3 record and the Sharks are a team that can keep up with them up and down the ice.
The Sharks have scored 14 goals in their last four games, and I expect them to keep it rolling after a big win on Monday night.
Sharks vs Kraken same-game parlay (SGP)
The Sharks and Kraken haven’t been getting saves lately. Yaroslav Askarov is coming off of a strong game, but his month of January has been very inconsistent. Askarov has gone 3-3-0 thus far this month and has skated to a .896 save percentage and a 3.05 goals against average. For Seattle, Joey Daccord has been the better of the two, but allowed five goals on 22 shots in his last start. Both teams have been scoring goals lately and struggling to defend. This should be high-scoring.
This is a bit of a riskier leg, but Macklin Celebrini has been playing excellent hockey and the previous two matchups between these two teams were both high-scoring games. Celebrini was able to produce in both of those contests and he has four points in his last four games. This kid is a star and I think he’ll have a big impact on tonight’s game.
