The Ottawa Senators are looking to make it three wins in a row as they host the Washington Capitals tonight.

The Sens returned home to defeat Toronto and Utah over the weekend before enjoying a well-deserved break. Meanwhile, the Capitals are wrapping up a five-game road trip, with the first four games played out west.

Both teams have been extremely stingy on defense this season, and my Capitals vs. Senators predictions are expecting another low-scoring affair in Ottawa. Find out more in my NHL picks for Thursday, January 30.

My Senators pick
Under 5.5 (-131 at Pinnacle)

My Senators analysis
Tonight’s game at the Canadian Tire Centre is a matchup between two of the best defensive teams in the league. The Washington Capitals allow a league-low 2.34 goals per game, with the Ottawa Senators holding the sixth-best mark (2.70).

There have been five goals or fewer in 12 of the last 13 Senators' matchups, with the lone outlier being their 6-5 shootout win in Boston in an afternoon game. Even with that five-goal outburst from the Bruins, the Sens have still allowed just 29 goals in their last 13 contests (2.23 per game). If you take out that meeting with Boston, it’s down to two goals per contest.

Meanwhile, Washington has gone Under 5.5 in 10 straight games with a total of 37 goals — 26 for and 11 against — during that span. The Capitals have allowed one goal or fewer in seven of those contests, including a 1-0 overtime win earlier this month in Ottawa.

The NHL has been trending toward the Under more this season and these two teams are a prime example of that. Ottawa is the most profitable Under team in the league this season at 30-14-6, with the Capitals not too far behind at 27-18-5.

Senators vs Capitals odds analysis

There hasn’t been much line movement on the moneyline for either side. The Senators have been listed between -105 and -115 since the opening, and I would back them, especially considering their rest advantage with the Caps coming off a game in Calgary on Tuesday night.

The total is still set at 5.5, but the money has been pouring in on the Under to give us this juicy -131 number. I wouldn’t be shocked if this got down to a flat 5.0 by puck drop.
