The Calgary Flames have dropped consecutive games and now trail the rival Vancouver Canucks by one point in the Wild Card race as they welcome the Anaheim Ducks to town.
My Flames vs. Ducks predictions see Matt Coronato stepping up and helping Calgary reclaim momentum with a much-needed victory.
Let’s break things down further with my NHL picks for Thursday, January 30.
Flames vs Ducks prediction
My Flames pick
Matt Coronato Over 0.5 points (-110 at BET99)
My Flames analysis
Matt Coronato continues to skate on a line with Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman at 5-on-5. That trio has played terrific hockey together, helping the Calgary Flames tilt the ice in their favor almost every shift.
The Flames have controlled 57% of the shot attempts, 58% of the scoring chances, and 58% of the goals with that line on the ice, dominating the run of play.
That should continue tonight against the Anaheim Ducks, who've played miserably at 5-on-5 all season long and things just aren’t getting better.
Over the last 10 games, the Ducks rank 31st in shot suppression and 30th in goals against during 5-on-5 play. They’ve also played at the highest pace in the NHL, creating a fantastic environment for opposing offenses.
Anaheim has also taken a lot of penalties on a nightly basis and struggled to kill them off, clicking at just 73.9% on the year.
Coronato should be one of the biggest beneficiaries of an advantageous matchup across the board. He’s a key cog on the Flames’ best even-strength line in terms of controlling the play.
He also skates on the No. 1 power-play unit, getting him exposure to the team’s best weapons like Jonathan Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri.
Coronato has failed to hit the scoresheet in four straight games, his longest such streak since back in October when he was still playing 13 minutes a night and hadn't established himself.
Look for him to snap out of it against the Ducks.
Flames vs Ducks same-game parlay (SGP)
Rasmus Andersson has recorded multiple shots in 57% of his games this season and six of the past 10. He generally doesn’t shoot a ton against quality shot suppression teams like Winnipeg, Los Angeles, etc. but has shown the ability to take advantage of more favorable matchups.
He certainly has one in front of him against the Ducks. They have allowed more shots per game to defensemen than anybody over the last 10 games as well as throughout the entire season.
Andersson took full advantage of the Ducks last time they met, recording three shots on six attempts just a few weeks ago.
The Ducks have won 10 of 25 road games this season while the Flames own a 15-7-3 record on home ice. The Flames are a better team, they’re at home, and projected starter Dustin Wolf owns a sparkling .922 save percentage since the holiday break.
