The Montreal Canadiens have dropped three consecutive games in regulation, slipping out of a playoff spot in the process.
My Canadiens vs. Wild predictions see Patrik Laine taking center stage in an attempt to help the Habs get back on track with a much-needed victory.
Let’s take a closer look with my NHL picks for Thursday, January 30.

My Canadiens pick

My Canadiens analysis
Patrik Laine has provided a nice spark to the Montreal Canadiens’ offense since returning to the lineup. He’s hit the scoresheet in 59% of his games and his splits are much more favorable when playing in Montreal, which is the case tonight against the Minnesota Wild.
Laine has points in 44% of his away games compared to 69% at the Centre Bell. He has only gone back-to-back home games without a point once, and that stretch came over his last two.
Those zeroes were put up in very difficult matchups, however. The Devils rank fourth in goals against per game this season while the Jets sit second. A lot of players routinely come up empty vs. those teams.
Although the Wild are a quality side, they look more vulnerable than the Jets or Devils were.
They’re playing in the latter half of a road back-to-back against a rested and hungry Canadiens team coming off three straight losses.
The Wild are also missing crucial players in Kirill Kaprizov and Jonas Brodin. The former has played at a Hart Trophy level this season while the latter is one of the best defenders in the sport and would be a top candidate to try and slow Laine down.
Filip Gustavsson will also get the night off after starting in Toronto, leaving Marc-Andre Fleury to man the crease tonight.
There’s been a sizable gap in the level of play between the two goaltenders this season. Gustavsson has saved +13.4 goals above expectation while Fleury has posted a net of -5.4 in that same category.
At this stage of his career, he’s more likely to give up a goal he shouldn’t than make saves you wouldn’t expect.
An elite shooter like Laine is the perfect candidate to take advantage.
Canadiens vs Wild same-game parlay (SGP)
Lane Hutson has 25 assists over his past 29 games and has registered at least one in 19 of them, pushing a 66% success rate over that span.
He plays a ton of minutes at 5-on-5 and quarterbacks the top power play, where feeding Laine in a prime shooting position has served as his top priority.
If we isolate wins — and the Canadiens are notably favored in this game — Hutson has recorded an assist 75% of the time.
Like most teams, the Canadiens have performed better at home than on the road. With a scheduling advantage in their back pocket, I like their chances of bouncing back.
