The Florida Panthers have had the Boston Bruins’ number in recent years, winning six of the last eight regular season meetings.
With the two sides on completely different paths, my Panthers vs. Bruins predictions expect more of the same this time around — with one of Florida’s newcomers (not that one) helping lead the charge.
Let’s take a closer look with my Tuesday, March 11 NHL picks.
Panthers vs Bruins prediction
My best bet
Seth Jones Over 0.5 points (+115 at bet365)
My analysis
Seth Jones has made a seamless transition from arguably the worst team in the NHL to the defending Stanley Cup champions.
He’s played three games with the Florida Panthers and has fared well, helping them control 56% of the shot attempts during 5-on-5 play. The Panthers have generated 25 chances with Jones on the ice in that game state, the most of any player on the roster.
Although he’s yet to hit the scoresheet with his new team, that should change imminently. Jones has played well at both ends of the ice and fellow right-handed defenseman Aaron Ekblad, who was quarterbacking the top power play, has been suspended for 20 games.
Ekblad’s absence figures to open up more minutes for Jones at 5-on-5 and, more importantly, with the man advantage.
Jones has only played 45 games this season — most for a bottom-feeder that struggled to score — and yet still sits tied for 17th among defensemen in power-play points.
He is an experienced, effective power-play quarterback and a right-handed shot, which should help make the transition from Ekblad to Jones relatively easy.
The Boston Bruins have lost eight of the last 10 games and just sold off what felt like half their roster at the trade deadline — including franchise face Brad Marchand to these very Panthers.
Not to mention, defensive studs Charlie McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm are still sidelined with injuries.
Florida is the much better team and should dominate the run of play. With Jones likely to get all the ice he can handle, and play in every key situation, this is a great spot for him to pick up his first point.
Panthers vs Bruins same-game parlay (SGP)
Sam Reinhart is difficult to slow down at any time. Rested Reinhart, though, is a completely different animal.
Reinhart is coming off a couple of rest days. He has absolutely dominated in those situations this season, hitting the scoresheet in seven straight games following two days off.
He has steamrolled the opposition along the way, piling up 12 points and 30 shots on goal along the way. Incredible numbers.
Boston’s blueline is missing its three best minute munchers in McAvoy (injured), Lindholm (injured) and Brandon Carlo (traded). They don’t have the horses to slow Reinhart and Florida’s lethal top line or power play.
The Panthers lead the NHL in expected goals share since the 4 Nations Face-Off and look poised to challenge for another Stanley Cup.
They should have little problem flexing their muscles against this thinned out Bruins squad that is limping toward the finish line.
