The Pittsburgh Penguins take its league-best road record to KeyBank Arena in Buffalo to try and win the season series, as the two teams have each beaten one another in previous matchups this season.

The Sabres will try and slow down the Pens and have won four of their last five, with three of those victories over playoff-bound teams. Can the Penguins shuffle out of Buffalo with a victory or will the gutty Sabres defend at home?

Penguins vs Sabres picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline/Puck line analysis

The Pittsburgh Penguins have won its last three games, two of which were on the road. That increased their record away from Pittsburgh to 21-7-4, the best in the NHL.

The Pens are still three points behind first-place Carolina Hurricanes in the Metropolitan Division. The Sabres are mired in sixth place in the Atlantic Division and traded away disgruntled star Jack Eichel to the Vegas Golden Knights earlier in the season.

The Penguins and Sabres have played each other twice this season, with both games in Pittsburgh. The first was in November, the first game after the Eichel trade, and the Sabres won, 2-1. The second time, the two teams met was a month later and the Sabres tied the game at two in the third period before ultimately losing in overtime, 3-2.

The Penguins are coming off a 5-1 victory on Tuesday over another team likely to miss the playoffs, the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Penguins are 23-8 in their last 31 after allowing 2 goals or less in their previous game, and 9-4 in their last 13 after scoring 5 goals or more in their most recent outing.

Playing back-to-back games is not an issue for the Penguins. They are 4-4 on the second night of back-to-backs. Back-up goalie Casey DeSmith is the likely starter for Pittsburgh. He has played in 16 games and has a GAA of 2.99 and a .904 SV%.

Prediction: Penguins ML (-215)

Over/Under analysis

When the Penguins and Sabres get together, it is a low-scoring affair.

In the two previous meetings, the Under hit both times, despite one contest being decided in overtime. The Under is 4-0-1 for the Penguins in their last five games and 3-0-1 in the last four as the favorite.

The Under is even better when the Penguins are away from home. The Under is 8-0-1 in Pittsburgh’s last nine road games, and 5-0 when they are the road favorite.

The Sabres are one of the lowest-scoring teams in the NHL. They rank 25th in goals per game at 2.62. Surprisingly, the Over has hit in three of Buffalo’s last six games. The Over has also hit in Buffalo’s last four games against Metropolitan opponents and is 7-2-1 in the Sabres' last 10 games as a home underdog.

Still, no Buffalo player is in the top 50 in points, and the team has scored only 13 goals over its last five contests.

Prediction: Under 6 (-115)

Best bet

Pittsburgh has been solid on the road. It's led by Sidney Crosby, who is 23rd in points, and Jake Guentzel, who is 12th in the NHL in goals.

The Penguins are 22-7 in their last 29 games as a road favorite, and 45-21 in their last 66 games following a win. As a favorite, Pittsburgh is 61-26 in their last 87 games and 38-17 in their last 55 against a team with a losing record.

The Sabres are 17-37 in their last 54 games and 38-78 against Eastern Conference opponents. Buffalo goalie Dustin Tokarski is 38th in the league with a GAA of 3.09 per game with a .906 SV%.

With the Penguins such overwhelming favorites, there isn’t much value in betting them on the moneyline at -215, but coupling them with the under provides value at +175.

Pick: Penguins ML and Under 5.5 (+175)
