Best NHL player prop bets for March 16
Leon Draisaitl anytime goalscorer (+105 at bet365)
The Edmonton Oilers visit Madison Square Garden to face the New York Rangers in the night portion of Sunday’s NHL slate. Since New York is playing the second game of a back-to-back, Jonathan Quick will start in goal after Igor Shesterkin played Saturday.
That gives Edmonton’s offense an edge, as Quick has allowed three or more goals in six of his last eight starts. He possesses a .872 SV% and 4.02 GAA over that stretch.
If the Oilers capitalize, Leon Draisaitl will likely be involved. The current front-runner for the Hart Trophy, Draisaitl leads the league with 49 goals, which is 12 more than the second-highest mark.
Connor McDavid anytime goalscorer (+110 at bet365)
I also want to back Draisaitl’s teammate, Connor McDavid, to find the back of the net in this matchup. My thinking here is simple: we are guaranteed a profit if either Draisaitl or McDavid scores, and if both score, all the better.
Draisaitl and McDavid skate together on the first power-play unit, which should see plenty of chances since New York ranks 23rd in penalty minutes per game. Taking frequent penalties is costly against Edmonton, a team that ranks among the Top 5 in power-play percentage every season.
At least one of Draisaitl and McDavid has scored in 12 of the Oilers’ last 14 games, and both have scored in two of those.
Anders Lee anytime goalscorer (+240 at bet365)
Continuing with teams that take frequent penalties, I am fading the Florida Panthers as they visit New York to face the Islanders. Entering this matchup, Florida ranks 29th in penalty minutes taken per game.
That brings us to Anders Lee, who leads the Islanders in both goals and PP goals. Lee enters this game in strong form, having scored twice in his last four games.
This success will continue against goaltender Vitek Vanecek, who is slated to take the crease for the Panthers. Through 19 appearances in net this season, Vanecek is 4-10-3 with a .886 SV% and 3.32 GAA.
