Zach Hyman has been quiet lately, hitting the scoresheet in only one of his last seven games.

My Oilers vs. Rangers predictions see the skilled energy winger getting back on track in a better matchup than meets the eye.

Let’s take a closer look with my NHL picks for March 16.

Oilers vs Rangers prediction

My Oilers pick: Zach Hyman Over 0.5 points (-145 at BET99)

My Oilers analysis
The New York Rangers are coming off an impressive shutout victory over the Blue Jackets, but their defensive play has not been stout of late.

At 5-on-5, they rank 22nd in shot suppression and 27th in expected goals against over the last 10 games. They've given up a lot of good looks, which is not a recipe for success going against the league’s two most dominant forwards — both of whom Zach Hyman has exposure to.

Hyman continues to skate on Connor McDavid’s wing at even strength. He’s also the net-front presence on a loaded power play featuring McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. He's certainly being used in opportune situations to produce points.

There’s also somewhat of a due factor with Hyman. The Edmonton Oilers have scored nine goals, and generated more than 12 expected goals, during his minutes over the last seven games. He’s only factored in on three of them, good for an individual points percentage of 33%.

Hyman’s season-long IPP sits above 40%; before this year, the lowest rate he posted was 49%. It’s abnormal for him to be uninvolved to this extent. Given his role riding shotgun with the game’s best player, the goals should continue to be there nightly — and it’s only a matter of time before he starts to benefit again.

It’s also worth noting the Rangers have spent a league-leading 5:50 per game shorthanded since the 4 Nations tournament concluded. Hyman and Edmonton’s scary power play should have plenty of opportunities to go to work.

Oilers vs Rangers same-game parlay (SGP)

Zach Hyman Over 0.5 points

Connor McDavid Over 2.5 shots

Will Cuylle Over 1.5 shots

As the season has progressed, Connor McDavid seems to benefit more and more from rest. That makes sense given how much hockey he’s played, be it last season’s run to the Stanley Cup Final or the lack of mid-season break due to the 4 Nations tournament.

McDavid has averaged 2.5 shots on exactly five attempts per game over his last 10. His numbers after a rest day tell a much different story. His shot totals have soared following an off day as he’s averaged 3.6 shots on 6.5 attempts the past 10 games played in those circumstances.

He recorded 2+ shots in all 10 games, giving himself a legitimate chance to clear this every time out. The Rangers have given up plenty of volume at 5-on-5, and have taken a lot of penalties, so McDavid has a nice matchup to let it fly.

Will Cuylle has at least two shots in eight of his last 10 games, including four of the past five on home soil. He was recently promoted to the top offensive line with Artemi Panarin and Vincent Trocheck and has played more as a result, logging 16+ minutes in back-to-back games.

That kind of opportunity makes a big difference for Cuylle. He’s registered multiple shots in 73% of games when playing 15+ minutes and nine of the last 10 when surpassing 16 minutes of ice.
