Moneyline analysis
With the Lightning, Panthers, and Maple Leafs possibly making the bigger moves at the deadline in the East, the Rangers additions have gone slightly under the radar and that's likely fine by them. New York needed to add some scoring depth, as it has been heavily reliant on the top line, and its new toys could really help push it to the top of the Metro Division.
The Rangers acquired Frank Vatrano from the Panthers and he’s already chipped in with a goal while playing on the top line with Artemi Panarin and Ryan Strome, while newcomers Justin Braun, Tyler Motte, and Andrew Copp add plenty of other dimensions to a Rangers team who just became much harder to play against.
This is a team, that's addressed its toughness, and now has a solid 12 forwards as well as a great blend of talent on the blue line. The Devils might not know what’s coming as Gerard Gallant has not put out his new toys yet.
Before all the moves, the Rangers were busy knocking off two of the East’s best, in the Hurricanes and Lightning, in consecutive games and outscored them four to one. Despite all the moves to the team’s skaters, this is still goalie Igor Shesterkin’s team and they’ll only go as far he can take them. Right now, he’s driving the bus.
The betting favorite for the Vezina and a possible Hart nominee is sporting a .938 SV% with a 2.05 GAA on the season. He isn’t confirmed for tonight’s game, but with Alex Georgiev playing the last game, it’s almost certain the team’s most valuable player will be between the pipes. So, can the Devils stop this re-tooled team that has slowly crawled up the standings in the East?
New Jersey comes into tonight’s matchup having lost four of its last five games and has given up exactly six goals in three straight games. The Devils are playing their first game home after a three-game road trip that saw them go 0-3 SU and get outscored 18 to nine. The first game home after a cross-country road trip is not a great schedule spot for the Devils, especially when they have to play in Toronto tomorrow night.
The Devils have been getting torched at 5-on-5 of late which will only help the Rangers who are starting to improve offensively at even strength. Twenty of the Devils' last 21 goals allowed have come at even strength, while the offense has dried up and is scoring just 2.67 goals per game since March 1.
The market is moving towards the Devils but that could be a slight adjustment to the Rangers closing as -170 favorites in the last meeting. However, a lot has changed with both rosters since that last matchup, as the Devils are dealing with some key injuries and are riding Jon Gillies and Nico Daws in net, with both owning GAAs above 3.00 this month. The Devils’ schedule isn’t helping them much and the Rangers have dominated the previous meetings. We aren’t betting against Shesterkin down the stretch either.
Prediction: Rangers 3-way moneyline (+105)
Over/Under analysis
The Devils have played three consecutive 6-3 games and although the offense has done its part in scoring, can it keep rolling against Shesterkin, who stopped 32 of 33 New Jersey's shots in the last meeting?
Shesterkin hit a little bump in the road when he gave up four goals in back-to-back starts just four games ago, but he came out of that minor stumble allowing just three goals over his next two starts against the Islanders and Lightning. It looks like he is back to Vezina form and the team will be playing with a boost after the front office showed some support and brought in some new talent.
Despite giving up 18 goals over the last three games, the Devils’ penalty kill has been solid and this New Jersey team hasn’t taken many penalties. In all, the Devils have been shorthanded just three times over their last three games, and with the Rangers likely needing a little time to adjust to their new skaters and ranking as a Bottom-5 team in most 5-on-5 offensive metrics, we aren’t sure the Rangers are going to run this score up.
To hit this Over 6, we’d need the Devils to score at least three goals, which is something we aren’t high on. With the books posting a Devils’ team total of 2.5 and -115 to the Under, they aren’t either. The Rangers could win 6-1, but they have scored just six goals over their last three games and have no problem tightening up defensively when they have the lead.
Yes, Daws and Gillies deserve to be hit with an Over in seemingly any game they play, but against Shesterkin and a team that will be rolling out some new lines offensively, this seems like the exception.
We doubt we’d put any of our own money on this Under with the recent play of the Devils, but we like the Rangers to continue to shut down their opponents. They've seen a closing total of 5.5 in six of their last 10 games. It’s a lean on the Under for us.
Prediction: Under 6 (-115)
Best bet
This is a Rangers team that just got the green light from the front office that they're willing to compete with the big boys in the Eastern Conference. They're coming off wins versus the Lightning and Hurricanes, with the latter being on the backend of a back-to-back with their backup goalie in. The offense might not be rolling, but the Rangers are allowing just 2.50 GAA over the last 30 days and Shesterkin is back in form after a rough two-game stretch.
The market is adjusting to the price after the Rangers closed as -170 ML favorites at home earlier in the month which might have been a little short. The Rangers have won eight straight meetings while New Jersey's goaltending has been predictably awful of late as it's riding a third- and fourth-string netminder down the stretch with injuries to its two top goalies.
The Rangers are stealthily moving up the standings and we think that continues tonight.
