The Sentry Live Odds, Field: Champions and Challengers Collide on Maui

Even though some big names (Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy) are absent for varying reasons, the field for the first PGA Tour event of 2024 is jam-packed with big names, including tournament favorite Scottie Scheffler and FedExCup champ Viktor Hovland.

The Sentry kicks off the 2024 calendar at the Kapalua Resort on Maui this weekend.

We will see a new winner, too, as each of the last two champions — Jon Rahm (2023) and Cam Smith (2022) — has since jumped ship to LIV Golf.

Even without those two heavy hitters, the field is a big one with a lot of pedigree spread between the 59 entrants.

We look at the favorites and the field in our betting preview for the 2024 edition of The Sentry, complete with live golf odds and free golf picks to follow.

The Sentry field and favorites

The 59-golfer field is comprised of tournament winners from 2023 and everyone who finished within the Top 50 in last season's FedExCup standings (Rahm excluded).

The betting favorite is the OWGR No. 1-ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler (available between +550 and +600 to win outright) with FedExCup champion Viktor Hovland the only other golfer drawing odds shorter than 10/1. Hovland won three tournaments in the 2022-23 season, trailing only the departed Rahm. Scheffler is one of seven other multi-tournament winners from last year making the trip to Maui.

Those golfers are Max Homa (+1,400), Tom Kim (+2,500), Tony Finau (+3,300), Wyndham Clark (+5,000), Keegan Bradley (+6,000), and Lucas Glover (+12,500). Rory McIlroy, who also won a pair of PGA Tour events last year, is skipping The Sentry to open his season in the Middle East on the DP World Tour.

Also drawing short odds relative to the field are Ludvig Aberg (+1,400) and Collin Morikawa (+1,400).

The most recent former winner of this event to also be in the field is Harris English, who claimed victory at the 2021 edition. He and Xander Schauffele are looking to join the likes of Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson as multi-time winners at Kapalua.

The Sentry picks and predictions

Collin Morikawa Top 10 (+130)

It’s a new season and few will be happier about a fresh start than Collin Morikawa after a relatively subpar 2022-23 Tour season. However, those tides have already turned with a win at the ZOZO in October ahead of a seventh-place finish at the Hero World.

He now returns to Kapalua a year removed from letting a nine-shot final-round leap slip to Jon Rahm. Either way, that second-place finish was his fourth Top-10 finish in four tries here in Maui (T7, T7, T5 in three prior starts).

He ranks second in the field in true strokes gained over the last six months and is fourth from tee-to-green and 30th in putting (his biggest weakness) over that span.

When you combine that type of form with stellar course history and the unfinished business angle, anything less than a week in contention would be a massive disappointment for Morikawa.

Pick: Collin Morikawa Top 10 (+130 at Bet99)

Max Homa Top 10 (+130)

Don’t let anyone tell you Max Homa is done making massive career strides. The fan-favorite tied the bow on a streak of six straight Top-10 finishes with a win on the DP World Tour in mid-November and has since finished T13 in Albany.

In line with his career-best form are improving finishes here in Maui in each of his last three tries: T25 in 2020, T15 in 2022, and T3 behind Rahm and Morikawa a season ago thanks to a Saturday-best 63 and a closing round of 66.

With five worldwide wins over the last two seasons and a top-tier statistical profile (fifth in true strokes gained over the last two years), it’s clear Homa is here to stay (and even has more room to grow).

Fresh off his win in South Africa, look for him to keep the good times rolling this week.

Pick: Max Homa Top 10 (+130 at Bet99)
