Two European powers clash in Dallas on Tuesday in a club friendly, as Spanish giant Barcelona of La Liga takes on Italian Serie A side Juventus at the Cotton Bowl. Unbeaten in their preseason so far, Barcelona comes into the match off a victory against their rivals Real Madrid, while Juventus have just one match against Mexican side Guadalajara under their belts.
Barcelona has spent the summer retooling, and the fruits of their labor have been quite sweet. Now, they look to finish off their pre-season matches against European sides with a win over a Juventus side that hopes to return to the summit after a poor performance last year. Side analysis
A pair of high-profile signings in Leeds winger Raphinha and the prolific goal-scoring striker Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich headline a busy summer of additions for Barcelona, as they seek to return to the La Liga summit and avoid a repeat of their embarrassing Champions League group stage elimination.
Raphinha is off to a flying start with the club, scoring a pair of goals and setting up two others in Barca’s first two preseason matches in the United States. With a pair of 'Man of the Match' performances under his belt, he will likely again link up with Lewandowski against Juventus on Tuesday.
Defensively, Xavi’s side has yet to concede a goal to either Inter Miami or Real Madrid, who were unable to so much as register a shot on target in their 1-0 meeting on Saturday.
Juventus are similarly looking to return to their previous glory, having failed to win the Scudetto in either of the past two years after nearly a decade of holding the Serie A crown. A fourth-place finish was viewed by all around the club as a failure, but it remains to be seen how their summer business will impact their standings.
The departure of forward Paolo Dybala and defender Matthijs De Ligt left a pair of gaping holes in the side, but free transfer Angel Di Maria and recent purchase Bremer will seek to plug them.
Paul Pogba returns to his former club on a free as well, but an injury in training over the weekend to his knee will see him kept out of this matchup. Juventus will hope to get more from their midfield this season, and his availability will play a key role in whether that productivity level improves.
Star forward Dusan Vlahovic and veteran defender Leonardo Bonucci were both held out of the 2-0 win over Guadalajara last week, and should feature from the outset.
Barcelona’s new signings have injected a heavy amount of energy and attacking prowess into the side, and seven goals from their first two matches — albeit aided by a rout over an MLS side — is giving their fans reason to hope again.
Their midfield, led by the elder Sergio Busquets and academy product Pedri, is one of the best in Europe and the addition of Franck Kessie on a free transfer solidifies it even more. Kessie’s knowledge and experience against Juventus gives them an even bigger edge, especially against a thin Juventus midfield with Pogba relegated to the stands.
Barcelona are in midseason form at the moment, while Juventus are already having to deal with injury concerns. Furthermore, the lack of depth on their bench lends itself to leaving them exposed vs. a much stronger Barcelona reserve pool when the inevitable mass substitutions begin for both sides. For this season, the Catalan giants should emerge victorious when the final whistle sounds.
Prediction: Barcelona moneyline (-125 at bet365)
Over/Under analysis
The addition of Vlahovic to the Juventus attack will give them a more potent attack than the one on display against Guadalajara. While the Turin outfit won the match 2-0, both goals came from academy products with little experience against top-level clubs. Their lack of production from bigger names was surprising, and the loss of Pogba takes away nearly all of their creativity in the center of the park.
The oddsmakers are expecting a shootout — but that’s not something Juventus likes to find themselves in. In addition, Barcelona’s defense has been much improved with the addition of Andreas Christensen, and while Benzema was absent from the match, holding Real Madrid without a shot on goal was quite impressive.
I expect Juventus to emerge with a bit more of a defensive mindset, hoping to grind out a result, and this should lead to a low-scoring affair.
Prediction: Under 2.5 (+170 at bet365)
Best bet
With a matchup against Real Madrid on the weekend, Juventus will undoubtedly play their starters no more than an hour, meaning their first-half performance is likely to be their most productive. However, Barcelona have been ruthless so far this preseason prior to the intermission, scoring against Real Madrid inside a half hour and leading Inter Miami 3-0 at the break.
Juventus will concede possession to Barcelona and that will play right into their hands. Xavi’s men are playing with a high level of confidence, and they simply have a plethora of options in attack with Lewandowski sandwiched by Raphina and the newly-healthy Ansu Fati.
Throw a possible appearance by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang into the mix, plus the likely return of Serginho Dest to the starting XI, and I love Barcelona to lead at the break and carry that to a full-time victory.
Pick: Barcelona half time/full time (+175 at bet365)
