The Round of 16 is upon us and it’s England vs Slovakia in what’s looking like a fascinating contest.
Before the tournament, you’d have looked at this game as a certain England win but they’ve been unconvincing so far, despite winning Group C. Slovakia finished third in Group E but had some good moments, including a famous victory over Belgium.

My analysis
It’s finally time for the knockout rounds of Euro 2026 and Sunday serves up two cracking games, the first of which, England vs Slovakia, is one that’s worrying England fans far more than you’d have expected.
Slovakia have been reasonably good at the Euros so far but besides their famous win over Belgium, they’ve only earned a point. On the other hand, England topped their group but with one win and two draws, they’ve failed to play at the level expected so far, and in truth, there is a lot of toxicity around the team now. Playing Slovakia in the Round of 16 has its advantages on paper but if England lose this it’ll be hugely embarrassing for a team of whom so much is expected.
One thing we know is that Slovakia will be encouraged by what they’ve seen of England so far and they’ll get stuck into them from the first minute, which brings us to our best bet, Ondrej Duda to get booked at odds of +155.
The 29-year-old will line up in Slovakia’s midfield three and find himself in competition with Declan Rice and Kobbie Mainoo, who is set to get his first start at Euro 2024. That’s a midfield duo featuring two players that are usually calm and composed and Duda will be keen to get into them. He’ll also be tasked with watching the runs of Bukayo Saka on the right flank and watching England’s number 10, which will likely be Jude Bellingham again.
Those battles should put him on a collision course with a booking to add to the one that he’s already picked up already this tournament. He’s averaged 1.3 tackles per game and a huge 2.3 fouls per game. He won’t be able to continue those numbers against a team like England without getting booked.
It’s also worth flagging that in 32 Serie A games for Verona this season he managed to pick up 10 yellow cards and a further two reds. He’s a talented player but he’s a man who can put in rash tackles and that leaves him open against an England team who have a lot of ability, even if they’ve not had a great performance yet.

My analysis
We’ve reached the Round of 16 and so far Harry Kane has just one goal to his name. To make matters worse he’s had three performances that frankly haven’t been at the level that we expect of him. He looks to have lost some pace but that is perhaps as a result of the injury that he suffered at the end of the season.
One thing to note is that England started the last Euros poorly with three fairly disappointing group games, only to improve when the business really began. There are issues with this team but also a feeling that things could improve quickly.
Kane would be the main beneficiary of that and could erupt against Slovakia if the team gets going here. They’re a reasonable team with a strong defense but Kane at his best should be able to take them apart.

In addition to our best bet for the game, we’re going to hope that England get back to their best. The media are reporting that Luke Shaw should be back for England and having width on the left flank would instantly improve this team. The addition of Mainoo to the heart of midfield would also help.
However, England still needs to find a way to get Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, and Kane working together. If that’s solved, or even close to being solved, then they’ll win this game. In addition to backing England to win we’re also going to back England to have Over 4.5 shots on target, they can improve quickly and would be good value at these odds.
