Everton vs Burnley predictions

Side pick

Despite the loud criticism toward new manager Rafael Benitez from Everton supporters, due to his successful history with hated rival Liverpool, the Toffees have gotten off to an undefeated start. They have defended as well as a typical Benitez team, as he's obsessive in his preparation, while he has made great use of the surplus in attacking talent compared to his previous team in Newcastle. Entering the weekend, only Manchester City and Liverpool had created more expected goals than Everton's 6.1, with their seven goals scored also third-highest before match week four.

Though Benitez was not able to secure as many additions as he would have liked, the additions Everton did make were shrewd. Andros Townsend has seemingly picked up the form he showed during a brief spell under Benitez at Newcastle United, while Demarai Gray has begun the season in the best form of his career. Salomon Rondon, with Benitez for a third time, is yet to debut but will give them a fantastic target and hold-up man, whether they are chasing a game or killing it off. With a world-class manager and a quality squad, Everton should be competing for a European place throughout this season.

For Burnley, avoiding relegation would be a nice achievement (they currently have the fourth-lowest odds to be relegated at +150). After years of survival and success under Sean Dyche, playing with an emphasis on allowing low-quality chances to their opposition in order to regain possession, cracks have shown early in the season. Allowing two goals to Brighton, who famously create a high number of chances without finishing them, on the opening weekend was a foreboding sign and it has only continued for the Clarets.

Burnley appear less defensively solid and less threatening in attack while having possession even less than previous years of admirable Premier League survival. Add in Everton's home advantage on a Monday night, and it's clear this one is only going one way.

PICK: Everton (-143)

Team total pick

The Premier League, while not without surprises, has its fair share of certainties up and down the table. Among those are two which relate to Monday's match: Rafa Benitez will have his side prepared to defend with excellent organization and intensity, and Burnley will struggle to create chances.

So, we absolutely love a Burnley team total of 0 goals on Monday, especially in comparison to the Under 2.5 coming in at -110. Through three games, the Clarets have scored twice, with one being a header that could have easily been ruled out after a shove in the back, and the other the result of a deflection on the way to the net. They are 14th in expected goals, after finishing last season with fourth-fewest xG, ahead of two relegated sides and Crystal Palace. Creating chances has never been Burnley's strength and they appear to be hitting a low point this season.

Everton, meanwhile, entered the weekend with the eighth-lowest expected goals against mark, with nearly half their total coming in a frantic 2-2 draw against Leeds at Elland Road. Benitez's team defends so well, with brilliant organization and a compact line. Center-back Michael Keane is well-equipped to handle the physicality of Burnley striker Chris Wood, with strike partner Ashley Barnes far from his best to begin the new season.

Burnley rarely threaten their opponent and won't do so here.

PICK: Burnley team total - 0 goals (+125)
