Side analysis

In case the Merseyside derby needed greater stakes, both Everton and Liverpool are in desperate need of three points.

Everton sit in 17th and face another tough season with the club looking to avoid relegation once more.

Liverpool, meanwhile, come into this game flying. They smashed Bournemouth 9-0 last weekend and beat Newcastle with a 98th-minute winner in the week. They enter the week five points back from Man City and seven points behind leaders Arsenal.

Everton will set up with plenty of men behind the ball to frustrate Liverpool. In their last game against Leeds, they were set up with four at the back with Lampard starting Nathan Patterson and Vitalii Mykolenko on either side of James Tarkowski and Conor Coady.

Neal Maupay will make his debut up front, having signed from Brighton earlier in the week. He’ll be flanked by Anthony Gordon and Dwight McNeil, but those two will likely spend a lot of the time dropping back in to make five in midfield and then trying to join the attacks when Everton counter.

Jurgen Klopp will stick to his usual 4-3-3 but with a number of injuries, as well as the need to rest players, we might see some changes. Joel Matip is expected to return to partner Virgil van Dijk at the back with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson likely to start at fullback.

The midfield is further depleted, with Jordan Henderson injured, so Fabinho and Harvey Elliott will be joined by either James Milner or Fabio Carvalho. Carvalho scored the winner against Newcastle in a great cameo and there’s a chance that he gets put into the lineup somewhere, although you’d the front three of Luis Diaz, Roberto Firmino, and Mohamed Salah should remain the same.

Darwin Nunez has returned from suspension but Firmino has been brilliant in recent weeks, scoring three goals and assisting three more already this season. Nunez will be a threat from the bench though, and is somebody who could feast on a tired Everton in the second half.

The late winner against Newcastle papered over the cracks for Liverpool, as did the 9-0 win over Bournemouth. This Liverpool team still don’t look anywhere near their best. They’ve been very slow at the start of their games and that’s giving their opposition an opportunity to get into the match and cause them issues. Everton will start this with intensity and Liverpool need to match that.

With Liverpool starting slow and Everton looking far better defensively this season, there’s value to be had in backing the draw at halftime at +162. Lampard will be telling Everton’s players to focus on defense first, so they’ll likely limit the amount of clear chances that Liverpool can take.

Prediction: Draw at halftime (+162 at bet365)

Over/Under analysis

We are going against the grain here again, backing Under 2.5 goals at +150. If you remove the 9-0 win over Bournemouth, then this Liverpool team haven’t been as free-scoring as other years and they’re still not looking totally gelled, which admittedly might be down to the injuries.

I can’t imagine Everton scoring many and as long as the scores are level, we won’t see them venturing forward much.

In the past six meetings between these teams, we’ve seen four games go Under 2.5. Not only that, but both of Everton’s home games this season have seen Under 2.5 goals too.

Prediction: Under 2.5 (+150 at bet365)

Best bet

There’s been a lot of talk about a poor season for Mohamed Salah so far, but he’s still scored two goals in five games, despite apparently not being at his best.

The goals will come for Salah, as he’s still been threatening and getting in dangerous positions. The Egyptian is simply too good and after not scoring in the 9-0 victory, or against Newcastle, he’s due to score and he should add to his tally in this game.

Pick: Mohamed Salah anytime goalscorer (+105 at bet365)
