International soccer is back with a bang this Wednesday as Germany and Portugal meet in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals this week, with both teams hoping to reach this weekend’s final.
There are several key players missing for both teams. Still, there’s one name who never fails to turn up for his nation, that’s why our Germany vs Portugal predictions have Cristiano Ronaldo taking over 2.5 shots for Portugal on Wednesday.

Germany vs Portugal picks and predictions
My Germany vs Portugal best bet: Ronaldo Over 2.5 shots (-138 at bet365)
The UEFA Nations League semi-finals are taking place this week, with Germany and Portugal set to face off in Munich on Wednesday. Given that Die Mannschaft will be playing on home soil in front of a predominantly German crowd, it’s no surprise that they’re heavy favorites to win.
Big names like Antonio Rudiger and Nico Schlotterbeck are sidelined, as are Kai Havertz and the excellent Jamal Musiala. Without Musiala, this German attack is missing one of its smartest players and somebody who exploits space exceptionally well.
It's not just Germany missing big names, given that Nuno Mendes, Joao Neves and Vitinha all started and won the Champions League this past Saturday, it seems unlikely that they will all, if any, start this game, and even if they do, they will no doubt be tired and not at full match fitness.
One player who will be eager to play is Cristiano Ronaldo, with the Portuguese superstar set to appear in his 220th game for his country.
Ronaldo is 40 years old and slower and less decisive than he’s ever been. Despite that, he’s still an icon, and Portugal manager Roberto Martinez doesn’t seem to have the fortitude to leave him out, and it’s expected that he’ll lead the line on Wednesday.
He’s racked up a staggering 136 goals for Portugal and will be hungry to defeat Germany for two reasons. Firstly, he has never beaten Germany in his career, and secondly, because it’ll put him one step closer to silverware, with picking up trophies something of an obsession for the veteran forward.
One thing about Ronaldo: If you allow him to shoot at the goal, then he will.
He’s played two times for Portugal in the Nations League this season and averaged four shots per game. If you look back at last summer’s Euro 2024, then Ronaldo averaged a staggering 4.6 shots per game for Portugal. This season, while winning the Golden Boot in the Saudi Pro League, he’s averaged 4.9 shots per game.
Ronaldo’s talent and ability to decide games have declined as he’s grown older, with Father Time still unbeaten. One thing that hasn’t diminished is Ronaldo’s hunger to score, and with CR7 likely to start, it’s very possible that we see him take over 2.5 shots at goal.
Germany vs Portugal same-game parlay (SGP)
Between the two teams, we saw three of their four Nations League quarter-finals finish with over 2.5 goals. However, those games took place in March, things look very different now. It’s been a long, hard season, and the players will be looking forward to their summer vacations, with their minds elsewhere.
Some key players are missing for both teams, and the tired players who will be playing won’t likely put up a huge performance. Likewise, these teams are both better defensively than Italy and Denmark, whom they respectively met in the last round.
The final leg of this Same-Game Parlay is for Florian Wirtz to score or assist. In six Nations League games for Germany this past season, he scored three and set up a further three goals. That’s all to add to another big season for his club, with 16 goals and 13 assists in all competitions.
With Jamal Musiala out, amongst others, there’s going to be even more emphasis on Wirtz to be the difference maker and he has the talent to rack up a goal contribution in Munich.
