Portugal vs Spain picks and predictions

My Portugal vs Spain best bet: Spain to win (-111 @ Bet365)

This Sunday we’re set for a hugely exciting final between Portugal and Spain, two of the world’s premier soccer nations. This year’s meeting between Portugal and Spain will likely result in a winner that has previously won the tournament, with Portugal winning the inaugural tournament in 2019 and Spain winning the most recent edition in 2023, sandwiching France in the middle.

Portugal beat the hosts, Germany, on Wednesday and comes into this with an extra day’s rest. The Portuguese were clinical as they came back from a goal down, and looked far more threatening in front of goal, despite ceding possession to the Germans. Ronaldo, as he always does, took headlines with the winner, but it was the midfield that won them the game, with Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Neves, Bernardo Silva, and Vitinha, who came on after 58 minutes, who stood out.

The ability of that midfield to progress into dangerous areas was sublime, and the Germans had no answer. Vitinha is likely to start this game, and they might just have the edge over Spain’s midfield. The issue for Portugal is their attack. Ronaldo is still iconic, but he’s not been world-class for several years, while Diogo Jota and Francisco Conceicao, who’ll flank him, don’t offer the same level of creativity and attacking threat that their opposite numbers in the Spain lineup do.

Spain comes into this with confidence. They won last summer’s Euros and were by far the best team in doing so. They’ve now gone a staggering 19 games without defeat and come into this as the favorites for next summer’s World Cup. They’ve seen improvements in defense, with Dean Huijsen having a breakout season for Bournemouth, but it’s their attack, notably on either flank, that makes they so dangerous.

Real Sociedad’s Mikel Oyarzabal plays through the middle, but the striker is still the weak link for this team, as evidenced by the 28-year-old failing to hit double digits in La Liga this season. Nico Williams is lightning quick, hugely talented as a dribbler, and finds himself getting into great positions, but it’s Yamal who is the crown jewel of this Spanish team.

Portugal can take some confidence in the way that France managed to get back into this game against Spain, having trailed 4-1 and getting back to 5-4, but it still wasn’t enough. Spain’s defense isn’t incredible, but when they have an attack that terrifies defenses, it doesn’t matter. If Spain scores first, this game is over, and even if Portugal scores first, they’re going to struggle to contain the Spanish attack. Such favorable odds on Spain need to be backed.

Portugal vs Spain same-game parlay (SGP)

Spain to win

Lamine Yamal to score or assist

Ronaldo 3+ shots

In addition to our best bet, we’re going to back Lamine Yamal, who may just be 17, but he’s elevated himself into being one of the best players on the planet, and he’s had a massive season for Barcelona. He’s scored 18 goals and set up a further 16 for his club this campaign and had an excellent game against France in the semi-final, a game in which he scored two. He’s the leading man for his country and hugely dangerous from the right flank. Expect him to be the difference maker again

The final leg of this Same-Game Parlay is for Cristiano Ronaldo to have three or more shots in the game. He’s averaged 4.9 shots per game in the Saudi Pro League this season, as he clinched the Golden Boot. This was our best bet for the semi-final with Germany, and we’re going back for more. He covered it with ease, with seven shots in that game, getting two on target and scoring once. Portugal won’t get as much of the ball as they did in that game, but he should still be getting the ball frequently enough to hit this mark, and his shooting numbers will increase as they chase the game.
