A first-time Women’s World Cup champion will be crowned on Sunday as Spain and England take the stage at Stadium Australia for their date with destiny Down Under.

Reaching the final for the first time is a landmark moment for this Spanish squad, not least because of their turbulent last 12 months under manager Jorge Vilda. But they’ve shown a knack for clutch goals in the knockout rounds, and Olga Carmona’s last-gasp winner capped off a frantic finish against Sweden in the semi-final.

It’s a first trip to the final for England too, and they’ll be back at the scene of Wednesday’s clinical 3-1 victory over Australia, where they burst the co-hosts’ balloon. Lauren Hemp led the Lionesses’ charge, silencing the Sydney crowd with a goal and an assist.

Read on for our free Spain vs. England betting picks and predictions ahead of this August 20 tournament finale.

Spain vs England picks and predictions

The semi-final hurdle had tripped England at the last two World Cups, but those setbacks have only strengthened this talented squad. It was third time lucky for the Lionesses on Wednesday — and I see their big-game experience shining through as they go for all the marbles here.

The European champions handled the hostile atmosphere at Stadium Australia in midweek with a composed performance that spoke volumes for the belief that Sarina Wiegman has instilled in her players. England always looked a step ahead of the Matildas, and I expect Wiegman to dial up another smart gameplan on Sunday.

They’ll get nothing easy against a Spain team that’s used to controlling the tempo and dominating possession. But England have seen it all at this point, and they’ve got the pace and movement in attack to hurt the Spanish defense. The Hemp-Alessia Russo partnership has really blossomed at this tournament, and they were too good for Australia on Wednesday.

Lauren James is available again after serving a two-game ban, and whether she starts or comes off the bench (a tough call for Wiegman given how well Ella Toone has played), she gives the Lionesses an extra gear.

Most of all, England are equipped to win the midfield battle, with Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway in fine form and ready for the task of containing the classy Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas. That’s where the game will be won or lost.

England are unbeaten at this World Cup and give little away defensively. I’m picking the Lionesses to settle matters in 90 minutes and bring the trophy home.

My best bet: England moneyline (+180 at bet365)

Spain vs England same-game parlay

England ML

Over 2.5 goals

Russo anytime goal

This doesn’t feel like the kind of opponent that the Lionesses can grind down in a 1-0 win, so I’m pairing the England moneyline with Over 2.5 goals. Spain have scored two or more goals in five of their six games at the tournament, and England’s last two contests have featured three goals or more.

I’m also picking Russo to deliver the goods again for England. She’s scored in the past two rounds and her movement is going to test a Spanish defense that can be vulnerable to pace.

Spain vs England spread and Over/Under analysis

The sportsbooks have offered a collective shrug with the odds for Sunday’s final as two evenly-matched teams collide. There are plus odds for all three outcomes and neither nation is likely to shrink from the spotlight here. While both are appearing in their first World Cup final, many of the players have experience in finals at club level.

Spain deserve a lot of credit for the way they’ve bounced back from the shock 4-0 loss to Japan in the group stage, battling for a pair of 2-1 wins in the knockout rounds. England have had to dig deep too — outlasting Nigeria on penalties, coming from behind to beat Colombia, and overcoming Australia on home turf.

While Salma Paralluelo has been the Spanish X-factor with crucial goals off the bench, I’m looking for Hemp to again be the straw that stirs the drink for England. In a pressure-cooker semi-final atmosphere, Hemp had an unbelievable game against Australia, producing a goal and an assist when England needed her the most.

A high-scoring game would be no surprise on Sunday given what we’ve seen from these teams Down Under. The Spaniards have tallied 17 goals in their six games, while England were ruthless in netting five times in their past two outings. I’ve flagged the Over 2.5 goals prop in the SGP above, and I like the odds for BTTS – Yes too.
