NEW YORK -- C.J. Cron's grand slam powered a five-run first inning Sunday afternoon for the Los Angeles Angels, who cruised to a 12-5 win over the New York Mets at Citi Field.
The Angels (23-23) got back to .500 after losing the first two games of the series. The Mets (18-24) have lost eight of 10.
The Angels led 5-0 before recording an out in the first against Mets left-hander Tommy Milone (1-2), who allowed a leadoff single to Cameron Maybin and a double to Andrelton Simmons before intentionally walking Mike Trout. Milone then walked Jefry Marte to force home a run before Cron homered deep into the left-field seats for his second career grand slam.
The Angels chased Milone in the second, when Trout crushed a two-run homer to center immediately before Marte homered to left.
Trout added an RBI double in the third, when he missed a two-run homer by about a foot, before the Mets chipped away against Jesse Chavez (4-5) with solo homers by Matt Reynolds (third inning) and Curtis Granderson (fifth inning) and a three-run blast by Jay Bruce (sixth inning).
But Simmons ended any hope of a miracle Mets comeback by hitting a three-run homer in the seventh off Hansel Robles.
Simmons, Trout, Maybin and Martin Maldonado all had two hits apiece for the Angels.
Chavez allowed all five runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out four over 5 2/3 innings.
Granderson and Wilmer Flores had two hits for the Mets.
Milone gave up eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out three over 1 1/3 innings. He was the first Mets' pitcher to allow eight runs in fewer than two innings since Johan Santana on Aug. 11, 2012.
NOTES: Mets IF Jose Reyes (left ribcage) was a late scratch from the lineup. Reyes, who missed three weeks with a left rib cage injury last season, said he tried talking manager Terry Collins into letting him play but that Collins wanted to exercise caution. INF Matt Reynolds drew the start and homered in the third inning. ... Angels 1B/DH Albert Pujols (hamstring) missed his third straight game. Manager Mike Scioscia said Sunday morning that Pujols, who was injured running the bases on Wednesday, was feeling better.
